Although it isn't really a tafsir, I really love Tafheem ul-Qur'an, the 6 volume set by Maududi. It is an indepth explanation that and it really helps clarify the verses of the Qur'an and make it a lot more comprehensive. It's available at dar-us-salam.com .

It is not advisable to read Tafsir of Maududi Sahab. He was a self-learned scholar. And hence, made serious blunders. And I'm sure a little research will give you a clearer picture. Try reading Maulana Yousuf Ludhwiyani Shaheed RA's critical analysis of Maududi. It'll help InshaAllah and will explain why is it not safe for laymen like us to read such stuff even though it may seem to be good and beneficial. If I were you, I'd start from Ma'ariful Qur'an for sure.

Every person should try to read at least 3 to 4 Major and detailed Tafseer Books in his life and also books of Hadees to increase its Islamic Knowledge

So what's the difference between all these tafseer s ?? Why are their so many and in different sizes ? Shouldn't tafseer be just one ?

I've never read one to be honest unfortunately, something that I have missed out on over the years but something I aim to change as well inshala.

There are more than one possible valid explanations of a text. Be it Qur'an or Hadeeth. This is one of the major reasons for differences amongst the Sahabah , and Imams of Fiqh .

The explanation and detail of a verse also varies from Mufassir to Mufassir, and hence difference of sizes. I hope I made sense.
