    Default Too many Shaykhs?

when we were young our ulema were referred to as maulana sahib or maulvi sahib and these were / are respectful terms.

theres a poster gone up in the local mosque for a programme taking place next week and there is a list of invited speakers. on this list everyone of the respected speakers has a prefix of hazrat shaykh xxxxxx xxxxxx or shaykh imam xxxxxx xxxxxx. but, they are maulanas who are known to us all. since when did they become shaykhs and imams??

one's the ex imam of our local mosque, this young maulana's being called shaykh imam xxxxx xxxxx!

correct me if i'm wrong but aint imam and shaykh big titles for great people?

or are they just trying to become more acceptable to non indo-paks??
    confussseeee????

    off topic: nice avatar!

on topic: Well I noticed in the indo/pak youngsters from where I was born that they seem to have a certain resentment for indo/pak words like namaz (salaah), topi (head cap) etc, so Moulana or Maulvi saheb sounds too desi for them, hence they like using Arabic terms instead.

    Assalaam'aaleykum!

May be it's a bit off-topic - Let me tell you that there are too many Shaykhs nowadays, some Real and some Phoney. We too have some bogus [no offense] Shaikhs on this board.

One is Milk Sheikh and other is Fake Shaykh.

P.S - Do not forget to say Salam whenever you come on board.

its because they like the celebrity status. the term moulana is not enough anymore.

I don't think it's for celebrity status, but maybe I'm too trusting.

My view is that it is a lot easier to combat neo-salafism, etc. A neutral brother/sister is more likely to attend a talk given by a shaikh than a maulana. Hence if our ulama use the term shaikh for advertising their talks, they are more likely to attract people to the correct understanding of deen.

"BOGUS" thats a bit harsh brother "aint got no shame"(need no name) , ive never wanted to be a wannabe shaykh hence the name "fake", i would think the name gives it away.

    Assalam o alaykum Mufti Sahib,

Is this the case because some Desis suffer from inferiority complex in comparison to Arabs. I have noticed that many after moving to West start to think of Desi scholars as inferior to Arab scholars.

One thing that puts me off some of our subcontinent scholars is the way they quote Arabic with a non-Arab tongue. It is annoying and many of them have the ability to read it properly because their tajweed when reciting Quran is at an acceptable level. For example they say haZa instead of hadha (with a dhaal). Why?

There is something beautiful and attractive about reading it with proper Arabic and for those who do notice these mistakes it can be very off-putting.

    It depends really.
For example "imam" Can just be given the one leading the salat, Because that's what he is.
On the other hand, Imam can have a great meaning, like the Imam's of the past who were were beyond any of the present day Imams in knowledge.
Allah says in sura furqan wa jalna lelmutaqeen imama, Meaning mak us for the righteous Imam(leader).
And sheikh can be given to ANY one who has reached a certain level of age.
Also sheikh can be given to the person who is well respected, has matured in his knowledge, and has some position within that Islamic academic society.
