Earlier in the evening Berlusconi had received a rock star welcome at a rally to mark the opening of public membership to the People of Freedom party. Saying that his popularity stood at 63%, he listed the successes of his government, which he said had included saving the world economy by persuading the US government to intervene "after they had left Lehman Brothers to their fate" in order to avoid "the failure of 400 banks, saving the world from an incredible and tremendous crisis".

At one point he interrupted the rally to address protesters who had been chanting "buffoon", saying they should be ashamed of themselves.

Towards the end he boasted that he was still "young and on form", opening his shirt to show that he "wasn't even wearing a vest", before he and a dozen ministers ended the rally with a sing–along of the national anthem.

Minutes later, the assault put an end to what should have been the prime minister's evening of triumph.

I always hated that wine swigging, party boy billionaire! Always going around insulting Muslims, saying how we're misogynistic as he goes around having sex with prostitutes! He definitely deserved to get hit in the face with that Catholic statue! And I heard on CNN that the Italians are saying it might have been a terrorist attack! They just want an excuse to be able to arrest anybody who's laughing at Berlusconi!

We as Muslims should not accept the right of Italy to exist as a country that does not submit to Islam, and who on the other hand has done many things to undermine Islam and the Muslims. Their current leader is particularly at the forefront of the worldwide war against Islam and the Muslims.

Having said this, we will not physically attack them or their leaders, but we will certainly feel happy when they are embarassed, hurt or killed, given the fact that the world has been divided between those in favor of Islam and those opposed to it. So those who are against Islam can never treated with the same feeling, coutesy or respect as the Muslims.

We stand for truth and justice, not for blind partisanship and certainly not for vigilantism. It is no wonder non-muslims have such a bad view of Islam; I would have a bad opinion too if I didn't know better. No one is currently doing more to damage Islam than muslims. I am reminded of a few words of Emir Abd al-Qadir al-Jaza'iri:
