when I was in college, we also had yoga classes

our class used to be from 6 am and we had yoga from 6am to 6.15 am. I was not a namazi then. Our instructor asked us to close our eyes and say "Om Om Om"(hindu religious word) and increase concentration. I used to close my eyes and do Zikr of Allah (though i didnt knew its importance as i know today). And most of the students used to sleep closing their eyes and our wardens use to think that they are deeply involved in Yoga

people say it is wrong, salat is much better than yoga etc

if you can not find serenity through salat, then you must question yourself. Yoga is a part of hinduism. We already have a perfect faith alhamdulillah. No need to follow such things.

    let's read what Shayh Faraz Rabbani says ;

    Asalamualaikum
According to the Fatwa of Darul uloom Deoband & Ask Imam (Mufti Ebrahim Desai Sahib D.b) Yoga is not permissible.

Is teaching or practising Yoga permissable in Islam.

    Answer 4825

    January 30, 2002

Q: Is 'Yoga' as a fitness programme permissible?

Yoga, according to the World Book lexicon is, 'A system of Hindu religious
philosophy that requires intense mental and physical discipline as a means
of attaining union with the universal spirit.' (World Book p. 2421). Hence
even though Yoga is used only as a fitness programme, it is not permissible
due to its close links with the Hindu religion.

    Mufti Ebrahim Desai
