This is the first time I've heard of this conference, so i wanted to ask:
1)Has anyone been there?
2)What's your opinion on it?
Mashallah, I've heard nothing but praises so far.

Bismillah...
As-Salamu `Alaykum wa Rahmatullah...
If you go, you will benefit from al-Habib `Ali al-Jifri, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, Shaykh `Abdullah Bin Bayyah, Shaykh `Abd al-Hakim Murad and Imam Zaid Shakir. As for the others, most are modernists or Wahhabiyyah and others I simply don't know. Barakallah Fikum.
Was-Salam

Shaykh Tahir Anwar and Shaykh Farz Rabbani were also amongst the speakers.

Some good scholars...but there are some reservations about the proceedings. Someone sent me this critic's page: Reviving The Islamic Spirit is Unislamic.
The person who wrote that is kind of strict it seems (not that there is anything wrong with that). He does have some valid criticism, though. It's kind of sad that a conference that is supposed to "revive" the Islamic spirit is doing many things which are totally unislamic like concerts and mixing of genders. Will Allah Taala give hidayat in such a "fitna fest" (as I like to call it)?
(Yeah, and that will be my sig for a while..)
As it is such a large setting, I guess intermingling is a test for you. As for Outlandish et al, there is a very weak opinion which allows that or I could be wrong, but this is not the fault of the `Ulama who spoke. Again, the camera men are responsible for what they did, not the `Ulama. The clapping is the responsibility of those who practice it. The "pomp" is subjective, and again nothing to do with the `Ulama. As for Women on stage, if they are covering their `Awrah, what is the problem? I am willing to be corrected as long as you post a refernce from the Madhahib. If it is permissible, and you still have Shahwah, then you shouldn't attend but not censure others. Take from the `Ulama in the best way, and leave the rest. Was-Salam

I understand everything you said, but still, one must keep in mind that the purpose of such gatherings are supposed to be for the pleasure of Allah. And how will the pleasure and acceptance of Allah Taala be gained when such activities are taking place (with the sanction of an unislamic atmosphere)?
I am not attacking the Ulema, nor saying it is their fault, but they still have a position for which they are respected, and can make use of that position to speak out against the wrongs being committed.
Nor am I asking people to refrain from attending, but keeping quiet implies acceptance of such evils. If no one does Amr Bil Maroof, then the evils will never change..perhaps only get worse. Some criticism and Amr Bil Maroof is necessary and beneficial for all.
Allah Knows Best, may he give us all hidayat.
Amr Bil Ma`ruf is for those things which are agreed upon and objectively prohibited by the Shari`ah. If you are directing it at the organizers and `Ulama, name me one thing that they have done to deserve this. If you are directing it at the camera people or the people who were intermingling, go ahead, but that has nothing to do with the conference.
