    Unhappy Is this a sin?

    Hello

I am new to this board and have a question.

I have lots of pet birds at home. I used to give them a seed diet but when I found out that it is very bad for their health and gives them liver issues I stopped giving them a seed only diet. I researched alot and found out the best diet for my birds. I now make up a few boxes of salad which includes some vegetables and fruits. I mix in some seed into the salad and give it to my birds during the day. In the evening I make them a bowl of mixed soupmix and cous cous. I also buy bird pellets for them.

I have a part time job and I pay for all this. Over the last few weeks my mum has been yelling at me to stop giving them the diet I do and start giving them seeds only. Her argument is that I should not be wasting my money on buying such good food for the birds and that birds are made to eat seed and they do not care what they get to eat. She says the money I use on buying all the food for my birds I should give to charity.

When I have money left I do donate my money to charity but I know what is best for my birds after all the research I did. My mum will not let me buy any more food for my birds and wants me to give them seeds from now on. I really do not want to do this as I know it is bad for my birds.

I think that birds are living things just like us and it is not a waste of money to give them a proper diet as they are my responsibility.

My mum will not let me buy anymore ingredients for the food I make for my birds and is constantly yelling at me if I say I want to buy some.

Can I please get an answer if this is a sin or not.

Kindness upon animals is part of Islam and if we keep pets we are supposed to treat them in the best manner possible.

At the same time you are also obliged to listen to your parents, I think you should explain to your mother as to why you are giving them special diet and explain that as a Muslim you are supposed to treat them in the best way possible and if she still disagrees, give the pets to a shelter

Allah's Apostle said, "Whoever says, 'Subhan Allah wa bihamdihi,' one hundred times a day, will be forgiven all his sins even if they were as much as the foam of the sea," Volume 8, Book 75, Number 414, Narrated Abu Huraira,

Thank you very much. I will try explaining it to her. She says it is against our religon and I am pretty sure it is not. Is their anything in the quran or hadiths that forbids us to treat animals well? Or, could someone point out a verse or hadith that says that we are supposed to treat animals well? It would make it easier for me to explain to my mum with proof that it is in our religon to be kind to animals.

Maybe I will put my question in a proper way.

Is it permissable to spend money on my birds diet when their are people in other countries who do not have food to eat? Should I be giving the money I spend on my birds to charity?

This is what my mums argument is. Please note that I still give money to charity but I do spend money on buying a proper diet for my birds.

Please also tell her that any good deed in Islam counts as Charity so taking care of animals is also a good deed therefore charity.

Another one of my mums point is that birds are animals, they do not care what sort of food they get and it is a total waste to give them something that many humans do not have access to. How should I reply to this?

Even though animals do not realise what they are getting it is the pet owners responsibility to give them what is good for their health, correct?
