Calligraphy is regarded as the supreme art in the Islamic world. The status of writing in Islam has an elevated position, exemplified by a whole Chapter in the Qur’an being devoted to the 'The Pen' and significance of the Pen is further elaborated in Surah Ar Rahman ‘Allama bil Qalam’ ‘ He taught by the Pen.’ This introductory course to the Naskh script will include:
1. Historical development of Arabic Calligraphy
2. Arabic Alphabets both joined and independent using a Reed Pen
3. The science of perfect proportion by the measurement of Rombhoids
4. Writing your initials correctly with proportion of the script
5. Similarities and differences in the scripts
6. Studying a few calligraphy works
7. Producing a Final draft on canvass

Ustadha is an Arabic and English graduate. She is a PGCE qualified teacher with both QTS and CELTA teaching qualifications.She has studied Arabic, Tajwid, Fiqh and Aqeeda in the Middle East. She has also studied Islamic Sciences. Her studies include Al-Ajrumiyyah, I'rab, Sarf and other Arabic literature. She has pursued an MA in Islamic Studies (Arabic Translation) from SOAS. Ustadha has been teaching the Arabic language during the past five to six years and has been writing material to enable students to learn effectively. She is currently an Arabic, Tajwid and Calligraphy teacher at the Habiba Institute.

Introduction to Arabic Language, Arabic in context of other Islamic Sciences, Arabic Alphabet, articulating sounds of letters correctly. Reading alphabet on its own, joined up and words. Writing the alphabet, on its own, joined up and words. Identifying letters in the beginning, middle and end of a word. Definite and indefinite article, Learning Arabic Vocabulary (describing words, family, profession, objects, colours, animals, fruits), The article Gender, Nouns and nominal sentences, Demonstrative Pronouns, Personal Pronouns: attached and detached. Possessive case, Prepositions, Adjectives and adjectival Sentences. Verbs (Past and Present), Learning minimum of 20 verbs. Verb Conjugation. Introducing oneself family, friends. Asking for and giving personal information. Describing objects and things. Understanding and using common everyday language.

‘Salah comes from the word ‘silah’ – ‘to connect’. The objective of the course is to help one connect with Allah in Salah. How? By understanding word for word what you say in salah. Tafsir/explanation of Surahs you commonly recite including Al Fatiha, An-Nas to Al Kafiroon, tafsir of At-Tahhiat.
Course Content:
Concept of Salah, Silah. Communion with Allah.
Understand the meanings of what you recite in your five daily prayers.
Tafsir & explanation of short surahs including Surah Al Fatiha – Opening of Qur’an, Dua, other names of Surah Fatiha. An Naas & Al Falaq (Muawwidhatain) - Concept of Evil ‘sharr’ and Sihr and Allah being All Powerful. Al Ikhlaas -Tawhid, the Oneness of Allah. Al Kaafiroon, Al Lahab- Abi Lahab and his Wife.
Tasbeehat of Salah (Subhanaka Allahumma Bihamdika), Attahiatu Lillahi – Isra wa Mi’raj and the concept of drawing close to Allah in Salah.
Arabic grammar covers the recognition of nouns, indefinite and definite article, recognition of verbs, prepositions, pronouns detached and attached.
By the end of the module you will have better understanding of what you recite in your salah and be able to offer your salah more effectively with more Khushoo (focus and concentration).
