Wearing niqab in France could cost up to $2,200

The French parliamentary report on the wearing of niqab and burqa in France is now online.

The report estimates there are 1,900 niqabis in France, of which:

• 50% are under age 30
• 90% are under 40
• 66% are French citizens, half of which are 2nd and 3rd generation French
• 25% are converts to Islam
• 41% are Salafis

The report also:

• repeats the myth that the niqab is a non-Islamic practice
• attempts to study interpretations and evidences of niqab
• suggests the wearing of niqab points towards identity issues and is a sign of radical movements
• admits many young women wear the niqab by choice, primarily for two reasons: “the search for purity in practice of a more austere worship” and secondly “to create distance with a society considered to be perverted.”

I don't really see what the big problem is. People need to abide by the rules of their host countries. Last time I checked, people are free to move if they are unhappy with their country. If you want to live in an Islamic society there are plenty of them in the Middle East and South Asia. It's odd that Muslims do not see the irony in complaining about dress code mandates when a number of Muslim societies enforce an Islamic dress, and not abiding by this dress carries a much more severe penalty than just a fine.

Remember, Allah created us with different cultures and societies so that we may know and learn from each other. If Allah had so willed, we would all be the same.

The big problem is when French citizens believe it is fard or wajib to wear niqab and the laws of the country are going against their religious beliefs. The big problem is when French niqabi converts or second and third generation Muslims are face with such a dilemma. I'm sure it won't be easy as you make it to move to another country.

Right now it is the niqab and later it might be the hijab.

brother they are the ones (the west) that preach tolerance, they are the ones that preach for a free and fair society, respecting all cultures, where has all that gone? do you remember when taliban ruled afganistan, how the west and the "moderate" muslims came out with comments like yours and now look at thier stance.

muslims in the west will have to wake up and see this is just a start, they might not kick us out physically but they will slowly and slowly make it harder for us to practise our deen openly and freely, and these are the people who preach to the muslim world !

I understand your concern regarding the outlawing of the niqab, but you also need to understand that face to face communication is a part of western culture. If was a ban on hijab, then i most certainly would be against it. However, if a woman, one day, decides that the niqab is essential to her faith, then maybe she should go somewhere that practice is acceptable.

It should also be stated that the majority of Muslims do not seem to agree that niqab is wajib.

Fining for wearing niqab......... got double standards written all over it. It would be crazy bananas if they actually pass this law. I have a feeling that if they do pass this, they'd just be attracting more women to the islamic dress code.

Actually, the great majority of Ulema amongst the Ummah have stated that the Niqab is, in fact, wajib.

Not only that, but at least Imam Nawawi , Imam al-Haramayn , and Shaikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah have stated that niqab is mandatory by the consensus of the Ummah.

Yes, perhaps by the consensus of the ummah however many years ago, in the context of whichever society that scholar was living in. When was the last time the ummah was polled on this question? The fact stands that the majority of Muslim women do not wear the niqab.

The beauty of islam is that there is no priestly class between us and Allah. If people want to follow the opinions of a centuries old scholar, then more power to them. If people want to reinterpret things in a present day context, so be it also. Ultimately though, scholars are just as human as everyone else, and carry their own biases/ideas. We are all trying to live our lives in a way that is pleasing to Allah. Allah is the only judge.

Have you noticed that you claim yourself as being Maliki? So I find it quite disheartening that you ascribe yourself to a scholar, yet to immediately reject the counsel of the scholars when a matter that you dislike comes up.

It is this methodology that has destroyed the Ummah. We rush to champion whatever suits our desires, and cower away from anything that fails to appease us.

FYI, Many modern day scholars consider it a wajib and not something said only by "centuries old" scholars.

Lets leave the discussion about niqab being wajib or not aside.

You do realize that niqab is a part of Islam and at the very least it is the sunnah of the beloved Prophet(SAW)'s wives?
The least a Muslim can do is support a niqabi's right to wear niqab.
The problem is our own Muslims have turned against Islamic practices.
