It is prohibitively disliked (disliked tahriman) to offer funeral prayer in a mosque which has been built for the five daily prayers, the jumu'ah prayer or the eid prayers. This is irrespective of whether the funeral is offered inside the mosque or the funeral is placed outside whilst the people are standing inside the mosque . However, funeral prayer will not be disliked in a mosque which has been built specifically for this purpose. [f: Ibn Abidin's chose the position that it is somewhat disliked (disliked tanzihan) to perform the funeral prayer in a mosque, and his son, Ala' al-Din Abidin confirmed this.]

In Hidayah, Allama Burhaan Al-Deen writes,

"The Janazah Salah must not be performed inside a Masjid where the five times prayer is performed in congregation because the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, he who performs the Janazah Salah in a Masjid will not be rewarded anything."

    Allama Ibn-e-Nujaym writes in Al-Bahr Al-Raa'iq,

"The Janazah Salah should not be performed inside the Masjid because of the Hadeeth recorded by Abu Dawood that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, he who performs the Janazah Salah in the Masjid will not be rewarded anything, and in one narration it says that there is nothing for him." (Nothing for him from reward)

Imam Muhammad Al-Shaybaani has written in his Muwatta,

"The Janazah Salah must not be performed in the Masjid, this is what has reached us from Abu Hurayrah that the place where Janazah was performed in Madinah was outside the Masjid and that is where the Prophet (peace be upon him) would perform the Janazah Salah."

It has been similarly written in Al-Fatwa Al-Hindiyyah, Fatwa Qadi Khan and in Fatawa Bazaziyah.

Imam Ibn Al-Humaam has written the same as the aforementioned and also added that this is the chosen opinion in the Hanafi Mazhab.

In Al-Durr Al-Mukhtaar, Allama Haskafi has written,

"It is Makrooh-e-Tehrimi and it is said Tanzeehi."

Imam Tahtawi has written in his Haashyah Ala Maraaqiy Al-Falaah,

"The Janzah Salah is disliked in the Masjid where Salah with congregation is performed."

    Assalamu alaikum,

It is impermissible (makhruhe tahrimi). The rule is that the imam cannot be in the jamaat khana even if the muqtadis are in the jamaat khana - and this is irrespective of whether or not the dead body is in the masjid or not. There is proof of this from the hadith but I don't have time to quote it now.

edit: Brother Faykh Shaykh gave a better answer. When I finished posting mine I saw his was up.

    salaam.

the reason why im asking is because i attended a janazah recently. when i realised it was to be held in the masjid i questioned if it is permissable and was told it is and the prohibition is not about the actual salaat but about the body being prohobited from being placed in the masjid.

i do not know if the imam was inside or outside of the jamaat khana when performing the salaat. am i right in thinking it is ok as long as the imam is outside of the jamaat khana when performing the salaat?

    Assalamu aliakum,

Yes this is a common misconception. Moulana Thanwi wrote in Beheshti Zewar that even if the body is outside the masjid but the janaza salaat is inside the masjid - even then it is makhruhe tahrimi. Anyone can check it up.

If the imam is outside the jamaat khana and the followers are inside then it is fine - as also mentioned in Beheshti Zewar.

    Assalamu aliakum,

I am actually a little against this practice as well for some time. But to be fair the other party may not be without an argument and may hold this practice makhruhe tanzihi as one 'alim told me. He said there are some fatwas permitting it but so far I have not seen anything presented even by the proponents of the practice - but it probably does exist.
