Default Purpose of Dar al-Ulum Deoband - Mawlana Nanautwi

    Assalam o alaykum,

Founder of Dar al-'Ulum Deoband, Qasim al-'Ulum wal-Khayrat Mawlana Muhammad Qasim Nanautwi (may Allah have mercy on him), explained the purpose of this Madrassah in these words,

“This Madrassah is a cantonment of freedom movement which was given cover of education [after the war of 1857]. With the efforts of Mujahidin of this cantonment, our country India shall achieve freedom from the slavery of the aliens [the British] before the next 57 [before 1957], if Allah wills.”

    Aww

I'm a little confused about the position of following a Darul Uloom such as Deoband. I'm born into a Deobandi family so naturally I also follow Deobandi Ulama but my family aren't particularly religious so I don't understand what else there is to follow other than Deoband? I mean, I don't have any intentions of switching or anything, I'm just confused about how a lot of Deobandi Ulama go to pray in Saudi Arabia by the Shaykhs of the holy cities and surely they are not Deobandi as they haven't studied in Dar ul uloom Deoband? Also, I know that the Dar ul Ulooms in the UK in places such as Leicester, Bradford, Bury etc are also following Deobandi tradition but...to cut it short, people who are not Deobandi are not necessarily following incorrect beliefs are they? It's not a different sect of Islam, so what is it? I'm really confused.

Actually forget this. I've done some research round here so I've cleared up my misunderstandings.

    Aww,

Well I haven't finished reading up on it all yet because there is mountains of information out there, and even after sifting through it all to extract the most reliable sources, there's a lot to read. But the general gist I got was that it's a movement that was founded to preserve Islam in the subcontinent at a time of political unrest and oppression of Muslims under the British Empire in the form of a madrasah and it produced some of the most knowledgeable and renowned Muslim scholars and jurists of the Muslim world. People who follow the teachings of those Ulama are said to be Deobandi but Deobandis do not exclusively consider only themselves to be on the right path; in other words, the Deobandi way isn't the only way. Obviously there will be differences in belief among those who follow different Ulama because it all boils down to interpretation of sacred texts but as a whole, although we believe that the Sunni way is the only way, not following the Sunni Deobandi Ulama doesn't remove you from the fold of Islam or mean you have incorrect beliefs.

As for major oppositions of the Deobandis such those of the Barelwi movement, well having read about some of their beliefs such as those regarding the Prophet [SAW], they clearly have some things wrong that we wouldn't agree with, but I don't know if it means we can declare them apostates as they have declared us. On this note, I was wondering whether it would be permissible for us to pray salah behind a Barelwi Imam? Would it be acceptable?

I'm still not too sure about the position of the Barelwi movement from our viewpoint so any enlightenment would be good and if I've misunderstood anything, please clarify that as well

    J.K

    Wassalam

, I think you have summarized it pretty well masha'Allah!

It will depends by his actual beliefs: there are "moderate" and "extreme" Barelwis so it depends..
