Can anyone suggest widely available (as in something I could probably borrow from my library) books on Islamic history that are engaging reads?

Which aspect of Islamic history interests you, sister? The birth and spread of the religion? The notable figures, their lives and works? Or, do you have a specific goal in mind like a research project?

Divine help means to have enough strength to do good deeds, when one intends to do.Hazrat Ibrahim Adham

No specifics or research project. I just want an interesting book to go to when I have a moment in the day. If there's a book you felt was really beneficial to you and written well, I'd love to hear about it.
Currently reading Al-Ghazzali's "Exposition of the Hearts". Definitely beneficial, but not exactly light entertainmentI'm afraid I read well-written non-deeni books for entertainment, and deeni ones for potential benefit, and don't really know of any titles that fit both criteria. I mean, I hadn'T actually considered any deeni book in that light!
Sorry to have been so useless. Azhar Academy has an online bookstore - their website (you can Google it) has pretty clear categories, and an interesting selection. AFter I picked out some titles that interested me, I just checked with the more knowledgeable members here about the reliability etc. of the authors. Maybe you could try something similar? And do please share with us if you find some great books!

Yesterday, a sister posted wanting some books on this subject, I have searched but cannot find her thread again so I just thought I would the following suggestions.
Mods, if you can find the post, kindly merge this one with it.
the Oxford history of Islam--by John Esposito(sp?)
this is by a western academic who frequently writes about Islam, don't know what it's like though.
The History of Islam (3 Volumes) by Akbar Shah
This covers preislamic arabia all the way to the Ottomans (I believe Sultan Salim is the last one discussed), is a heavy read (in that it contains a lot of pages)
I can't think of anything else at the moment
