    Default Swimming?

    Assalaamu 'Alaykum,

Is swimming a sunnah of Rasulullah sal allahu 'alayhi wasalaam. I know that Hadhart Umar radiyallahu 'anh encouraged the teaching of swimming to children, but did Rasulullah sal allahu 'alayhi wassalm say anything like this, or did he ever swim?

    JazaakAllah khayr.

    Asalum-alaykum

something has just occured to me, when swimming we wear shorts however these shorts are designed to cover from the waist to the mid-thigh. the awrah (private area) of the male is from the navel to the knees and the swimming shorts/trunks are likely to leave a portion of his awrah uncoverd.

is it permissible for a male to have a prtion of his awrah uncovered if hes with muslim brethren, or ina male only swimming pool? are there any alternatives on the market?

    Allah knows best.

I cant remember where but i recently read a hadith wherein Rasoolullah is reported to have pointed out the place in Madina where he learnt how to swim when he was young (i think when he visited Madinah with his mother when he was young). May Allah forgive me if i'm wrong.

    Anybody know?

It is written in Uswah-i-Rasool-Akram () that "he sometimes used to go for swimming also", quoting from "Shamaa'il Nabawi".

    Wa'Alaykumus Salaam,

JazaakAllah Khayr. Do you know who the authors are, of the two Kitaabs you mentioned?

The author of Uswah-i-Rasool-Akram () is Shaykh Abdul Hayy Arifi , the Shaykh of Muft Taqi Uthmani (hafizhahullah) and a prominent khalifa of Hakim al-Ummah Mawlana Ashraf Ali Thanwi .

And the other post (#3), about Rasoolullah learning to swim when he was young, I cant remember where I read it but I'm sure I did. It may have been a book I just read called Hadhrat Ayesha Siddiqa () by Allamah Sayyidd Sulaiman Nadwi , but I am not too sure.

I think long shorts are widely available, there are also many non muslim men/ women who prefer to dress modestly. Search online or local stores for products which are suitable.
