A person can be considered Deobandi in several senses. He can be an 'Aalim who has graduated from the Seminary in Deoband or its sister Institutions in Indo-Pak. He can be a resident of the town of Deoband. He can be an aam person who holds as true the beliefs of the ahlus sunna as explained by the Ahl al Haqq. In general in the sub continent, any rational Muslim who takes his deen from the Qur'an and Sunna and is well established on the fundamentals of Islam is a deobandi. The deobandi ulama prefer to call themselves as Qasimi because of their religious disposition (mashrab) being patterned on Al-Imam Shaykh us Sayyid Maulvi M Qasim Nanotwi. Wa salam.

Deobandis are no sect they are nothing more than a group of Hanafi scholars that made a madrasa system that has had a great deal of success may allah reward them.
    Jazzakallah, for sharing.

I don't think you should look to label yourself as anything and you don't have to align yourself with a particular group. I had this dilemma too and realised that i won't find a group i agree with 100% on everything, and if you label yourself a salafi or deobandi or barelwi you will find yourself needing to defend things you may not necessarily agree with but because its an attack on your group you feel you must defend it.

Deobandi simply means a person who is from the city of Deoband. It does not necessarily mean that the person follows the Aqida of Deoband(or Ahle Hadith, Ahle Quran, wahhabi, salafi or whatever they are called?

    Hope that clears everyhting up.

Can you please clear this up: Who is a Barelvi, he is from Barelvi shareef, let it be mushrik, biddati, qabar parasth etc.
