Too many hours….it all depends but between 6-8 hours….when I was younger I used to read a lot of imam ghazali books and started doing some of the mujahidah including sleep….so cut sleep to between 3-4 hours….when I used to do the chisti adhkaar I would fall asleep whilst doing the zikr everyday for 5 minutes. But that 5 minutes sleep whilst doing zikr would get rid off all my tiredness…these days if I try and sleep less I’m a zombie the rest of the day…make dua that ALLAH gives me strength. Sometimes I feel like just sleeping….I don’t know why I’m so tired….And then you get people like my friend who Don’t sleep in the last 10 days of ramadan days on end…and when he falls asleep he sees the prophet Sallhualhaiwalsalam. So he said to me maybe I should sleep more often and I laughed and said it’s the barakah of all of those nights awake that you got to see Rasulullah SAW…That guy hardly sleeps. Four hours is too much….3 hours is average for him…but difference is he feels fresh….so how do the auliya do it???????

I have been thinking about this a lot lately. For some reason I convinced myself that 5/5.5 hours sleep is good enough but like brother London786 said, I feel so tired the rest of the day. Everyone at work asks me are you sick today and whoever calls me asks "Did I wake up you up" lol.
So I increase to 6 and 6.5 but that still didn't work. Now I have further increased to 7, make dua for me. Even 7 hours is hard to manage with my schedule, lol.

The other day I was at the mosque and this guy tried to give me some work. I was like, man I am swarmed with work. I can't even get 6 hours of sleep. He was like what are you talking about. If I get 5 hours, thats a big thing for me. I usually get 3-4 hours. I was like :O, didn't know what to respond.

Then this elderly guy was telling me last week (he always complains how messed up the new generation is, he is MashaAllah very pious himself), on how no one wakes up for Tahajjud and even if he sleeps at 2 he easily wakes up for Tahajjud. He was basically saying its all Shaitan.

So now I am really confused. Slept 7 hours last night. Played sqaush for an hour after Fajr and its almost noon and already feeling tired.........

Sheikh Yunus Jaunpuri used to make us sleep 6 hours a day by force. A bit more here and there wasnt a problem.

Truth is that day time sleep for some reason relieves more tiredness than night sleep, a 1 hour afternoon snooze is enough to keep you going till late night, and for most who are not used to sleeping during the day...if they slept during the day its difficult to get to bed at the usual time at night.

So it seems our mashaikh did a combination of both, sheikh sahib sleeps early after isha and is up before tahajud, then is awake until nearly midday before he has kaylullah.

I have also thought long and hard about this but without being able to speak to anyone its difficult to understand whether the body/soul/nafs can be trained to sleep less. Less meaning just 2-3 hours.

Maulana Hussain Ahmed Madani and Maulana Saharanpuri used to have a habit they whenever an opportunity used to present itself they would go to sleep even if it was for a few minutes. This is not to imply that they were lazy and slept loads, rather the opposite. They were always so busy and preoccupied they hardly slept.

There is an old article of pearls of the elders blog of Maulana Madani that he once didnt sleep for I think 7 days and was delivering a talk in deoband...he asked permission from the audience to be given a break so that he may get some rest. Sheikh Zakariya also wrote something along the lines of Maulana Madani travelling from hijaz, then via trains etc and getting to deoband and straight into lectures, he said how can one emulate that.

Also once a person reaches a station in tassawuf they see true dreams all the time, for that reason they actually force sleep. Maulana Ilyas went through that stage when he used to have oil massaged on his head to make him sleep.

In this age of ZOF (weakness) most Mashaikh make it necessary for their followers to sleep at least 6 hours (day and night combined).

Aarif Billah Hazrat Maulana Shah Hakeem Muhammad Akhtar Sahab Db strictly orders his followers to sleep at least 6 hours(day and night combined)

In this age, the stamina and general health condition of people is not the same as before. This is precisely the reason why Mashaikh dont prescribe the hard Mujaahidas which were used to be practiced a few centuries ago.

An incident comes to mind when a man came to Hazrat Mufti Shafi Sahab R.A. in Delhi. The man was extremely weak and didnt even have eyebrows because of weakness. He came to Mufti Sahab and asked if he remembered him. Hazrat Mufti Sahab could not recognize him. Then he told Hazrat that he was his student around 10 years back.

Hazrat recognized him and was shocked to see his condition because he used to be a very healthyguy. Hazrat asked him about his current condition and he said that I started practising the Mujaahidas mentioned in the books of Imam Ghazali R.A without consulting with any shaikh and still practise them.

Hazrat became very angry and said "Had you approached the Ghazali of your time, this would not have happened to you. You would have reached Allah(SWT)."

So we should be careful with these things and as my Shaykh Damatbarakatuhum says, sleep at least 6 hours daily(Day and Night combined) otherwise we might lose the balance in our personalities.

Now I'm trying to go to bed around 10 so that I can wake up for Tahajjud(Time for Salatul Fajr has gone too early), I try to wake up around 1 hour before Fajr and I stay awake for around 1 and a half hours, when I go back to sleep, my Mother comes and wakes me up around 7:45 but I usually find it difficult to get out until about 5 to 8. My school starts at 8:40 so I usually run and get to Tutor before 8:45 but I hardly have any time throughout the day to read books etc. Before I used to stay up to watch lectures because the best lectures come on after 10pm and I used to have auditory hallucination regularly from lack of sleep but unfortunately if I do that now, I will be in a deep sleep and will miss Tahajjud and Fajr. I have absolutely minimal time to do school work on the weekdays so I try to get up early on weekends but sometimes I just sleep in and sleep for about 12hours.

    8+

I like to get my sleep

Then again, I remember pamphlets I got from my old high school saying people around my age should try to get 9 and a half hours sleep, so I guess it's not that strange.

Ml Ismail (db) says that if you oversleep you lose Barakah in 3 things:

    1) your health
    2) your intelligence
    3) your rizq

A person came to Hazratji Inamul Hasan (rah) for permission to do Bara Thasbih, and Hazratji (rah) made it a condition he sleeps at least 6 hours a day otherwise his brain will become dry and he will become mad/ lose senses. When your heart turns more towards Allah, longing for Him increases and then sleep is just like playing video games is for most of us. It was good when we were kids, now its a total waste of time. This turning of the heart is the most difficult to attain.

Shaykh Hajeeji (db) when I met him a few days back said, he never eats dinner. He only eats 7 dates and drinks a cup of milk at night (drinking milk before sleeping is Sunnah). He said if he eats dinner he cannot get up early. Isha here finishes at 8pm. He sleeps around 10.30pm and wakes up daily at 2.30am. Fajr Azan is at 5.02am. Daytime he doesnt sleep at all. Thats how the Auliya do it brother. They are shopping in London but their hearts are with Allah

Sleeping seperates us from our Beloved, what use is sleep then!

If your sleepy you have to sleep otherwise I recommend:

    1) Reading Fadhail e Sadaqah
    2) Stories of the Auliya
    3) Doing Hijama

If the problem is not just sleeping but waking up from sleep, then there are other Amals the Mashaikh mention.
