    Dear brothers,

I have been reading further on the position of the Shafi'i school and it is apparent to me that trimming the beard shorter without excuse is not permissible. However, my question further would be this. I visited my mother recently (we live quite a distance apart due to my work) and she expressed that she did not like my beard and told me to trim as it does not look good on me. How do I deal with this, on one hand I believe that I should keep a fist length beard, but my mother dislikes it and I am also obliged to please my mother.

This is great news and an action which will be equal to reward of Shuhada if you remain steadfast insha Allah

I heard in a talk by a Shafi'i scholar Shaykh Nuh Keller, that you cannot listen to your parents if they tell you to go against a Makruh or Haram act and the example he gave was if they tell you to get rid of your beard, you cannot listen to them.

i would like to vote but my option isnt there, I think there is to much emphasis on the length & not on the actual sunnah which is to leave the beard. some cant grow. mine is for a few years a fist but from my nose.

    Once somebody told this thing

Dont see whether the sin is big or small...see whose disobedience you are doing...surely it is disobedience of Allah the most high

Dont see whether it is makhrooh or haraam...see whose style (way or sunnah) you are leaving...surely it is our beloved prophet muhammad who is the most high among creations

Well beard....masha allah...it is shaa'aar of islam (representation) ...it is sunnat-e-aadat of every nabi :as: and every suhabah had beard...everyone from salaf had beard...today also all the ulema-rushd (righteous scholars) and mashaikhs (spiritual teachers) have beard...it is the way of saaliheen (pious people)....i guess if we follow the common way of all these people, Allah wont let us astray...!

Anyway...i havent voted in this post as i have beard and i dont trim it alhamdulillah but it doesnt grow ...i dont trim or shave beard but dont have one fist as it doesnt grow...it should contain one more option...as per my spec

I have split the discussion for the sake of keeping this thread purely for encouraging every Muslim male to follow this blessed Sunnah of letting the beard grow.

Is the sin for trimming and shaving the beard equal?

Someone asked Hadhrat Thanwi, “Is it more sinful to shave the beard or to trim it?”

Hadhrat replied, “This is like asking the difference between a person who ate 200 grams of excreta and one who ate 1 kg of excreta.”

This means that the one who shaves is more sinful.

"The servant who is unaware of his contemptibility and regards himself as honourable, is truly contemptible"
(Ikmalush Shiyam - commentary of the Hikam of Ibn Ata'illah al-Iskandari)

If Allah had not concealed my faults, and my true self was displayed, people would not even spit on me.
