Default what do you do before sleeping?

    assalamu 'alaikum -

Just wondering what is a good sequence to do before sleeping?

    I try:
    1. Isha salat in masjid
    2. wudu at home
    3. witr salat at home
    4. recite ayat al kursi
    5. recite dua allahuma bismika amooto wa ahya
    6. sleep

    Is this adequate?

    jazakAllah khair.

Looks good to me but I think you probably have 1 and 2 the other way around.

    May Allah give you istiqamah.

    Asalamu alaykum,

I would say between 4 and 5, you should add: Hold palms up, recite the last three surahs of the Qur'an, blow into hands and wipe them over all parts of the body that can be reached. Do this thrice.

Also, it would be awesome if one recited Surah Sajdah & Surah Mulk, as Rasulullah would not sleep without reading these.
The recitation of the last two verses of Surah Baqarah would be icing on the cake...
...and may peace and blessings be upon the Beloved of Allah.

Also cleaning your bed with cloth is sunnah and also read 2 nafl before you go sleep is also reccomended.
Verily, Allah and His angels shower blessings on the Prophet. O Believers! send blessings upon him and salute him with a worthy salutation". (Qur'aan - 33:56)

Heh, I remember we were doing muzakra on this once and we got the list to 40+ I think.
    1. Isha salat in masjid
    2. wudu at home
    3. witr salat at home
    4. recite ayat al kursi
    5. 4 qul's (surah Ikhlas x3)
    6. Last 2 verses of sura Baqara
    7. Surah mulk
    8. x33, x33, x34
    9. wipe the bed x3
    10. recite dua allahuma bismika amooto wa ahya
    11. sleep

I'm not sure if these are actually proven from sunnah but I was always taught to do #5-9 (in addition to the first 4 you posted).

    1. Read Wudhu
    2. I read quite a lot of D'uas from Fortress of the Muslim, the D'ua for Worry or Grief, D'ua for Anxiety, D'uas for Anguish, D'ua for when something becomes difficult for you, D'ua to foil the plots of Shaytaan, Istighfar 3 times, La Ilaha Ill Allahu Wahduhu La Shareeka Lahu, Lahul Mulk Walahul Hamd, Wa Huwa Ala Qulli Shay In Qadeer 10 times (Reward equivalent to freeing 4 slaves from the children of Isma'il, D'ua for better sleep, all in all, takes about 5mins.
3.I read at least 2 Ahadith everyday from Riyadh-us-Saliheen
    4. Lie down and cup hands together, blow into them and read, Surah Al-Kafiroon x1, Surah Ikhlaas x1, Surah Al-Falaq x1, Surah An-Naas x1, Allahumma Bismika Amoothu Wa Ahya x3, Ayatul Kursi x1 (When I'm scared...a lot of times), when I learn the last 2 Ayahs of Surah Al-Baqarah I will read them as well.

Sometimes I do 2 Raka'at as well before I go to sleep when I don't feel it is a burden on me.

Masha Allah brother! May Allah give us all the tawfeeq to be as steadfast on Sunnah practices as you. Ameen.

PS: But I don't understand how you 'read' your wudhu!!

Yes I think this is a separate Sunnah too.

One thing which the mashaa'ikh put a lot of emphasis on is to do muhaasabah (accounting of one's deeds) before going to sleep.
Shaykh Tanweer Ahmad Khan (may Allah preserve him) says that you should make 3 du'as:
    1. Seek forgiveness for all the sins you've done in the day and ask Allah for the ability to refrain from them in the future
    2. Thank Allah for the ability (he give you) for all the good deeds you did in that day. Ask for their acceptance, istiqamah and ability to do more
    3. Thank Allah for all the blessings he has showered you with and ask for barakah in them.

Here are a few duas from Riyadus Saliheen and Hisnul Muslim that can be recited before going to sleep.

O Allah in Your Name, I die and live.

In Your name my Rabb I lie down, and in Your name I rise, so if You should take my soul have mercy upon it. And if You should retun my soul then protect it in the manner You protect Your righteous servants.

O Allah I submit my soul onto You, and I turn my face towards You,and I entrust my affairs unto You, and I totally rely on You, in hope and in fear of You. Verily there is no refuge or safe haven from You except with You. I believe in Your Book which You have revealed and in Your Prophet whom You have sent.

All praise is for Allah, Who fed us and gave us drink, and Who is sufficient for us and has sheltered us, for how many have none to suffice them or shelter them.

O Allah protect me from Your punishment on the day You resurrect Your servants.

O Allah verily You have created my soul and You shall take it's life, to You belongs it's life and death. If You should keep my soul alive protect it , and if You should take it's life then forgive it. O Allah, I ask You to grant me good health. (Muslim)

O Allah Rabb of the seven heavens and the exalted throne, our Rabb and Rabb of all things, Splitter of the seed and the date stone, Revealer of the Towraah, the Injeel and the Furqaan, I take refuge in You from the evil of all things You shall seize by the forelock. O Allah, You are the first so there is nothing before You, You are the last so there is nothing after You. You are ath-Thaahir so there is nothing above You, and You are al Baatin so there is nothing closer than You. Settle our debt for us and save us from proverty. (Muslim)

O Allah Knower of the seen and the unseen, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Rabb and Sovereign of all things I bear witness that none has the right to be worshipped except You. I take refuge in You from the evil of my soul and from the evil and shirk of the devil and from committing wrong against my soul or bringing such upon another Muslim. (Abu Dawood).
