ANSWERED: Can a parent give Zakat to their Children?

I would like to ask a question with respect to whether a mother can give her yearly Zakat to her son or daughter who may be in need of money (of course, this is after the children have passed the age of dependency, and are to fend for themselves).

It would be good if the scholarly opinions on this matter could be provided.

Zakaat cannot be given to ascendants, descendants. The Zakaat will not be discharged.

As Salaamu Alaykum.

It is not permissible for a parent to give Zakaah to her children.

Imam Abu Bakr al-Kasani ((Allah have mercy on him) said in his Bada’i` al-Sana’i`:

“It is permitted to give zakat to anyone besides one’s parents, and offspring from one’s relatives, such as one’s brothers and sisters and others. This is because shared benefit of mutual wealth is cut off between them [f: unlike one’s parents and offspring].” [Kasani, Bada’i` al-Sana’i`, 2.50]

The giver cannot materially benefit from giving their zakat. As such, one cannot give zakat to one’s parents, children, or spouse, because benefits between these people are shared.
