compilation of the Quran information

Im looking for detailed information about the compilation of the Quran. More specifically - how many huffaz were there among the sahaba, and their relationship to the Seven "modes". Im also a little confused on the apparent wholly different words existing in some of the variants - such as certain words in Fatiha.. There exist a number of sites like islamic awareness dealing with the topic, but is there any extensive research on the topic - a book maybe yall would recommend?
