Default How to Care for a Beard

    Salam,

I have got young beard, the hairs on my beard are 2-3 inches long and Alhamdulillah it's a full beard. I've never shaved or trimmed it before so it's natural.

Has anyone got any tips on how should I look after my beard, which part should I trim, where does the beard start from and finish under hanafi madhab, could I apply hair gel on my beard to keep the hair together and straight because it's too curly or will it mess it up?

    JAK.

    Just a few quick words.
The beard refers to the hair that sprouts from the chin and the jaws. Some scholars include the hair of the cheek in the shari'i beard and do not allow their cutting.
According to the Hanafiyya keeping a beard is wajib and shaving it is haram and effeminate. It comes in the major sins to shave off the beard or to cut it to less than one fistful length.
The minimum length of the beard according to our school is a fistful starting from the chin and according to some scholars this length is mustahsan. You can trim a few hairs here and there to keep the beard in shape while ensuring that it does not become shorter than a fist. You can comb it and apply oil as necessary. You can clip your moustache very closely or you can just trim the moustache away from the redness of your upper lip. It is allowed to shave the moustache but it is NOT Sunna. You can refer to Mawlana Ashraf 'Ali Thanwi's "Masa'ail of the hair" for further details or just post a question here. May Allah make you firm on the Sunna.

Find a good local barber who knows how to trim beards--it's worth it. There are also a bunch of beard care products out there, but the main thing is to apply oil every once and while to it and to comb it regularly.
