Lightbulb Pearls from Shaykhul-Islam Hussain Ahmed Madani (RA)

    All,

While I am reading many of the books which I have obtained from the Library of Shaykh (Maulana) Hasan Saheb (HA) Walsall (UK), I thought it would be nice to translate and present some pearls from the life of Shaykhul-Islam Hussain Ahmed Madani (RA) for everyone to read and ponder over.

    Pearl 1:

Fazal Kareem Khan Hussain (Assam,India) was a student at Darul-uloom Deoband during the year in which Shaykhul-Islam Hussain Ahmed Madani (RA) passed away and studied some of the Lessons from the Shaykh (RA), himself.

Fazal Kareem Khan Hussain narrates that Shaykh (RA) used to pleasantly and happily answers all the questions which were posed during his lesson, no matter how absurd or irrelevant the questions were Shaykh (RA) never got angry or showed disdain towards the students.

Last year a student started asking too many questions to the extent that the other students felt the excessive questioning and tried to rebuke him but Shaykh (RA) reprimanded all the students and told the one asking the question, “You may ask and I shall answer”.

Students came up with another tactic to stem the flow of excessive questions from their fellow student. They knew the love of Shaykhul-Islam Hussain Ahmed Madani (RA) for his beloved teacher Shaykhul-Hind Maulana Mahmoodul-Hasan Deobandi (RA) and his desire to imitate him so they replied, “...But Shaykhul-Hind used to reprimand students on these sorts of questions?”

Shaykhul-Islam Hussain Ahmed Madani (RA) replied, “Shaykhul-Hind (RA)’s lecture (of Hadeeth) was so thorough and encompassing that there was no need for further questions as all the doubts were removed during the Lecture. Who am I and where is my knowledge (in comparison)? So how can I show anger or displeasure (at asking questions)?”

What a virtous and humble personality! Makes me wonder why Ustadh of today ridicule students for no reason. Is it called tarbiyat? Anyway, I'm eager to read more...

So much spiritual benefit can be derived from reading the life of Shaykhul Islam (ra)!

Mawlana Shazad Khan from As-Suffa also teaches in a very similar style - he will listen to any and every question without any feeling or hint of displeasure. He is a Khalifa of Hadhrat As'ad Madani (ra). May Allah preserve him

There are so many amazing incidents about him in his biography written by his khalifah Mawlana Bayazid Pandor hafizahullah

    Here is one:

Once on a journey to U.P., the train stopped to pick up passengers at a station. A person aaboarded and came to Hadhrat's compartment. After introducing himself, he requested if Hadrat could perform a nikah which was going to take place at his residence. Hadrat asked to be excused, since he was presently on ajourney, other people were travelling with him and to now remove all their luggage, get off the train and procede just for the nikah would be extremely difficult on all. However, the man would not accept "no" for an answer. He became persistent, causing everyone to becoome annoyed and angry. Finally Hadrat gave in, and asked all to descend from the train with their luggage. After alighting from the train, Hadrat's companions asked the man where his conveyance was. The man explained that he possessed no means of conveyance but ensured them that his residence was just a block away. Carrying the luggagee, they proceeded ahead on foot but fouhnd block after block passing with no dwelling coming in sight. Certain people began getting irritated and few were burining with fury, but Hadhrat's blessed face showed not even a slight sign of displeasure. Luckily for all, a man on an elephant suddenly appeared, who agreed to transport all to the man's house. Indeed, Hadhrat's tolerance knew no limits. Bearing difficulties had in fact become not only manageable for him, but rather, quite simple and easy.

    Pearl 2:

Dr Muhammad Ashraf, the infamous leader of Indian Communist Party recalls, “In 1946 when the Muslim League advocated a separate state (in the name of Pakistan), the communist party had to research this question and its historical context and I was appointed for the job. I arrived at Deoband, in fact became Shaykhul-Islam’s personal guest at his own insistence.

I had seen scenes of devotion in collective acts of worship before but this was the first time I was given an opportunity to witness “private acts of worship”. After the end of Second World War, inflation and shortages were at an all time high but it made no dents to Shaykhul-Islam’s hospitality. If Shaykhul-Islam can invite an unknown “Non-Religionist” like me to be his personal guest and insist on hosting me you can imagine how he treated others!

When I arrived at Shaykhul-Islam’s residence there were 18 people already there so I also placed my bedding in a corner. I am petrified of the rituals and routines of religious folks but the first 2 days were torture to me, I somehow managed 5 times prayer but almost everybody at Shaykhul-Islam’s place was a “Night Worshipper”.

I had barely slept for an hour after Esha that I witnessed people engaged in Dhikr, recital of the Qur’aan etc and the same happened the next night so I went to Shaykhul-Islam and said, “Hazrat, my Akakhira may or may not benefit from staying here but my health is sure to suffer”. Hazrat smiled but on the third day I was given a different room where I had the freedom (like my own home) and I worked on gathering the relevant material for my research.

Perhaps it was the 4th night of my stay at Deoband and I was laying in my bed when I realized that someone was massaging my feet and when I realized that it was Shaykhul-Islam, I shot up like a bolt and was deeply embarrassed and tried to stop him with utmost respect and humility.

Shaykhul-Islam replied , “Why do you wish to deprive me of my reward? Am I not even worth serving a guest of your stature?”

I am unable to describe the impact of His words and mannerism upon me...”

Today after 12 years I am disclosing this incident (after his death) and if he was still alive I wouldn’t have disclosed it BUT the fact is that this is a small peak into his hospitality, generosity and good morals.

Allamah Anzar Shah Qasmi mentions the above incident (about Dr Muhammad Ashraf) in a bayan on the www.syedanzarshah.com website but in their he says that it was Mawlana Abdul Majid Daryabadi and that this incident was one of the reasons that he returned to Islam after being a communist. Recently though, in a local masjid, I was confused to hear a different incident on Abdul Majid Daryabadi's reversion to Islam, and after reading this (Pearl 2), it seems that Shaykh Anzar Shah confused the two.

I as well think to remember having heard this incident in a Bayan lately. Possibly from Maulana Anzar Shah Qasmi (who by the way is NOT son of Allamah Anwar Shah Kashmiri), but not sure...
