Default How well preserved is the Qur'an? [YOUTUBE VIDEO]

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=91AM7665cbo

It's a video by Christians who've looked into the books of hadith. The video's supposed to be funny (it's painfully not), but I want to know what Muslims have said about these texts instead of hearing the Christian spin on it.

    Thank you in advance.

I will let the other brothers and sisters post the academic response about the hisotrical proofs regarding the preservation of the Qur'an. Instead, the point I will be making here is that throughout the ages, the Qur'an has not been transmitted in written form alone, but orally as well. Since the time of the Messenger of Allah , there were literally thousands of the Companions of The Prophet who had memorised the entire Qur'an, a tradition that continues till this day. As a matter of fact, it was the martyrdom of these 'Huffaaz' (Arabic word for those who have memorized the entire Qur'an in its original Arabic language) Companions during the period of the Third Caliph was what necessisated the compilation of the Qur'an in a single volume in the first place. I would also like to point out the meaning of the word 'Huffaaz', which is a plural of 'Haafiz', meaning defender, preserver and/or protector. And people who have memorized the entire Qur'an by heart are named as such because they have acted as guardians of the Holy Qur'an from human tampering throughout history. If any attempt was made to alter the Qur'an or compromise its textual integrity, the Huffaaz would immediately expose it. That is why, I challenge the non-Muslims powers that even if they find and eradicate every single copy of the Qur'an on the face of the Earth, a single competent Haafiz alone will be able to reproduce its like thereof within a few hours, so imagine what we could do if all of us got together. And it is not as if the Hufaaz are some exclusive elite minority in the Muslim Ummah. There are literally hundreds of thousands of us right now, with more and more of us coming out of the 'madrassas' that you see in the news everyday. I am one, and I am sure you will find at least a dozen or so on this forum alone.

OK then, I hear you object, "So what? Anything that can be memorised can also be forgetten". Correct. But ordinary Muslims recite the Qur'an at least five times a day in their daily prayers, and go through the entire book during the month of Ramadan in Night Prayers and individual recitations, and the Huffaaz do significantly more than that. And not just that, any Muslim can memorize the Qur'an - male or female, young or old. We have Huffaaz ranging from the 6-year old girl to the 90 year-old man. We have those who have memorized the entire Qur'an in a couple of years, while others have done it in a mere few weeks. There are just many Huffaaz today, if not more, whose native language is not Arabic, meaning they can recite entire chapters from the Holy Qur'an, even if they don't understand a single word of it. And because the Qur'an has been preserved in its original language instead of in translations of original text like the Bible, the main source of the Islamic faith will always be academically superior compared to that of all the other religions combined.

That, my dear sister, is the real miracle of the Qur'an. You can change and erase what is in the books, but you can do nothing to that which has been preserved in the hearts. No book in the history of mankind has ever laid claim to such a feat, and never will.

Ahnaf Defender, I'm afraid I don't speak Urdu.

المفكّر - I appreciate the message, but I'm familar with that. It doesn't resolve any of the questions raised by the video regarding the inability of Umar to find a verse that he knew once existed and yet was lost, references to Qur'anic verses that are not present in modern Qur'ans, the discrepant number of suras among the various early reciters of the Qur'an, and the manner in which Ibn Mas'ud apparently clung to his narration of the Qur'an over Zayd ibn Thabit's official narration, and so on.

If someone can discuss the matter of the early preservation of the Qur'an rather than the present day, I'd greatly appreciate it.

    Nifaq

They acuse Muslims of falling into the same errors they fell in to, but refuse to acknowledge errors in their book.

This shows that our argument of an uncorrupted Quran for 1400 years is very strong, and they have nothing to say to disprove our argument - so they take bits and pieces of hadeeth out of context to show their fellow christians and keep them in the dark.

One reason I left christrianity was because as i was learning about Islam, I would see what christians had to say about it. They would either provide weak or fabricated rebuttals and responses to Islamic principals - I figured that if christianity was the ultimate truth, refuting Islam would be easy, and there would be no need for christians to come up with lies. Instead I saw christians mock Islam - say Muslims dont worship the God of Abraham - say we worship the moon - and simply fabricate and insult Islam rather than refute it with concrete evidence. When I saw the Muslims refute christianity - they did with respect for Jesus(AS), they did it without fabricating stuff, they did using the bible in a respectful manner - this showed me that Islam was on Haqq.
