Some people on Internet came up with the reference Tafsr Ibn `Abbs. Did Ibn `Abbas write any commentary of the Qurn known as Tafsr Ibn `Abbs?

Answered by Sheikh Muhammad al-Qanns

It is well known that `Al b. Ab Talhah had a copy of the commentary of Ibn `Abbs which was praised by the scholars for being the best in its attribution of authenticity to Ibn `Abbs.

Ahmad b. Hanbal said: There is a manuscript in Egypt of Qurnic commentary related by `Al b. Ab Talhah. If a man were to travel there solely for its purpose, it would not be a major hardship.

Ibn Hajar al-`Asqaln writes: This copy was in the possession of Ab Slih, the scribe of al-Layth. It is narrated from Muwiyah b. Slih through `Al b. Ab Talhah through Ibn `Abbs. Al-Bukhr has it by way of Ab Slih. He (al-Bukhr) uses it a lot in his Sahh in what he related from Ibn `Abbs.

Al-Suyt writes: The commentary of the Qurn that is attributed to Ibn `Abbs is too considerable to count, coming in various narrations by various means of transmission. One of the good lines of transmission from him is that coming by way of`Al b. Ab Talhah.
