Default Questions about Mauritania and Maliki Fiqh

    Salam Everyone,

Hope you are all doing well insh'Allah.

I recently came across Sheikh Abu Tauba video giving an overview of studying Islam in Mauritania as he has gone through rigorous training there in the Islamic sciences..

At the end of the part 3 video, he states that most of the Mauritanians don't like Shaykh Hamza Yusuf and his teacher Shaykh Murabit Hajj and they are hated.

I'm trying to start studying and I find this extremely disturbing since I've found both scholars to be very helpful, just wondering if anyone can give insight on this and why even within Mauritania there are divisions within traditional islamic maliki knowledge training.

Here is Sheikh Abu Tauba's blog.

    Thanks

    Assalaamu alaykum wa rahmatullah,

I spent some time in mauritaniyah and have seen some of abu tawbah's videos. A lot of what he mentions about mauritaniyah is untrue and nonsense. The above statement is also not true. Most mauritanians do not even know who Shaykh Hamza Yusuf is. Shaykh Marabitul Hajj is considered to be one of the top 5 scholars by mauritanian ulama themselves He is mostly famous in the region he lives and is not well known in other parts of the country. Shaykh Hamza has often asked his students to give his salam to Shaykh Muhammad Salim 'Adoud when they go to his ma'had. When I was there, there was a student of Shaykh Hamza Yusuf actually studying in Shaykh Muhammad Salim 'Adouds ma'had.

Abu tawbah isn't a scholar. It takes many many years to become a scholar in mauritaniyah as everything is memorised. Usually more than 15 years of continuous study. Sometimes a lot longer, hence why mauritania doesn't produce many scholars. Abu tawbah only spent a few months at a time from what I remember, spread over a few years. Not continuous.

When I was there, in Shaykh 'Adoud's ma'had, they taught the ashari aqeedah and were strict malikis. The ulama even used Shaykh Muhammad Zakarriyah's Awjazul Masalik to teach the Muwatta.

    wallahu a'alam.
    wassalaam.
