The history of modern Turkey is full of mysteries and lots of brutality, so much so that after the fall of Ottoman empire lots of things have changed including the alphabet, school system, army... ties with the past was severely eradicated and annihilated. Hijab is also one of them...
On the other hand, some unpublished history books and our elders tell us that during the Ottoman empire they used to recognize non-Muslim women from their uncovered faces, whereas Muslim women used to cover from head to toe in an absolute hijab.
During the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid, in Trakya, some Muslimat wanted to uncover their faces imitating non-Muslims, but the Sultan ordered that faces should be covered otherwise acid water was to be thrown at their shameless faces.
That was back then... now things are so different. Anyway, I wanted to share a picture from an archive taken back in 1915 - 1917, a decade before the fall of Ottoman empire.
Here is it.
