I asked the people at the mosque if the Mufti is coming today at East London Masjid. They answered no he isn't, it was cancelled because he is ill. But still if you happen to be at the masjid today don't forget to smile for the cameras, lol. Channel 4 are there filming for a religious documentary.

    Assalamu Alaikum,

I wrote a small summary of the bayan by Mufti Taqi Usmani (db) which he did in Leicester on Interest and Islamic Finance, and posted it on my blog. I'm postng here also to share the contents of the talk, Insha-Allah. It's just a very brief summary. Any errors found are mine.

    Bismillah...

What is the basic objective, the purpose of creation, why has mankind been created and sent to this world?

Every object of the Universe has been put in service and created for man. Even animals, some which are so much bigger and stronger than humans, have been made subservient to mankind, for example look at a horse how even a child can ride it, though it is so strong, it has been placed in our service.

Then look at the meal we eat, how many powers of the universe worked for that meal e.g. the example of bread.

This is the honour given to human beings, to be the best of creation. So why has everything been put to our service? For nothing, no reason?

The reason for our creation, the single objective, the one purpose we have been created is for the worship of Allah. Allah says in the Qur’an: “I created jinn and men only to worship Me.” (51:56)

This verse of the Qur’an shows the reason for our creation. Allah has purchased the souls of Muslims for a price, which will be given in the hereafter.
Other religions, for example Buddhist monks, Hindu priests etc believe and say that one should leave everything and only worship God. However, Allah HAS allowed us to do other work, but with the conditions:
    1) The intention should be good
    2) All deeni activities should be for Allah and subject to the teachings of Allah and Rasululllah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam.
If these conditions were implemented then all these extra acts will be thawaab (reward). But these activities are not the ultimate goal or objective. They have been allowed because without them we cannot live, but they are allowed only as necessity entails.

Wealth can also be a blessing or a good thing if one does not make it one’s ultimate goal. If love for material wealth enters the heart then it is not a blessing, it is a commodity of deception and will destroy you.

This is the basic philosophy of Islamic Shariah.

(Shaykh went on to talk about riba – interest)

Interest is unlawful; it is a sinful act that has become rampant in this society. In one of the verses of the Qur’an, Allah says that if you do not leave the practice of riba then there is war between you and Allah… this is a declaration of war between those involved in riba and Allah.

Rasulullah Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam has cursed the person who gives interest, the one who receives interest, the person who acts as a proxy for such transactions, the person who writes the interest transactions and the one who witnesses such transactions. (Hadith)

On the Day of Judgement the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam will intercede for the Muslims, but if the mercy to mankind has cursed those involved in riba, then who will be able to plead to Allah on their behalf?

Some people try to justify themselves (as they’re trying to fellow their base desires) whilst involved in riba (interest). This is the worse situation because if someone doesn’t believe in it being sinful it is very difficult for him to repent and leave it.

Shaykh related a joke: There was an Indian musician who went for Hajj, and on the completion of Hajj went to Madinah. He was staying at a hotel. He heard some Bedouins playing music outside, it was Arab music and he hated that type of music. He said that if the Prophet Sallallahu Alayhi Wasallam heard this type of music from the Bedouins no wonder he prohibited it. If he had heard my music he would have allowed it.
This is the mentally of some people, those who want to go/act according to their nafs.

Some people ask why Allah prohibits interest; what is the wisdom behind it? Asking ‘why’ goes against the principles of the Kalimah. Islam means total submission whether we do or do not understand.

A master asked his servant to purchase a certain amount of meat. The servant asks, ‘why? What do you want it for?’ Would this servant be hired or fired? He would not be tolerated in any way!
In the same way, Allah is our Creator, to say ‘why’ about any of His Commands is irrational. This question of ‘why’ has become so in fashion but it is totally irrational. As a Muslim even if you don’t understand you have to obey.

The activities of riba are such that if there is a profit you want a share in it, but if a loss is incurred you don’t want to share the loss. This is not a just arrangement.
These are unjust happenings where the richer get even richer and the poor going poorer. There is no justice. All the money that people deposit to the bank is transferred only to a few.

The whole World is in debt. The Muslims need to organise and take control, we have better principles than socialism and capitalism and so forth.

Muslims have the guidance of Allah. Principles have been developed by the Fuqaha, the Ulama. Many books have been written on this, Islamic institutes are being established, these are all heading towards Islamic principles. These Islamic banks do make some mistakes as they are under different legal constrains. But it is still good. It is the duty of every Muslim to contribute; Muslim youth must get proper knowledge to help out.

Profit and loss sharing is the goal to succeed. Muslims have to appreciate the gravity of riba.

That's a brief summary of Mufti Taqi Usmani's (damat barakatuhum) talk on Interest and Islamic Finance. I know I haven't done justice to the Shaykh's bayan. Once again any errors you may find above are solely mine.

    Wassalam.
