    Default Shariah Law

    Hello,

I was confronted by a non muslim in school and he asked me if a muslim had to follow the shariah law. I live in a nonmuslim country so I have no idea. I personally believe that The Holy Quran is the authority and that is what I follow. So does a Muslim have to follow the shariah law?

    Thanks

The Shari'ah is not confined to the Qur'aan. It includes the Qur'aan, the Sunna, Ijma & Qiyas.

A Muslim is obligated to follow the Shari'ah in every aspect of his life whether he lives in a Muslim

    country or not.

One thing that should be clarified.

When non Muslims ask these questions, they are usually refering to the aspects of sharia law that scare them, i.e. Hudud - in matters of capital punishment, Muslims are only obligated to follow sharia in matters of huddud under the rulership of a Muslim govt.

So while it i incumbant upon a Muslim in non Muslim lands to follow sharia law - that doesnt mean if a guy steals something from you, you are obligated to cut his hand off, or if you meet an openly gay man, that doesnt mean you are obligated to put him in some kind of jail cell until repents and then if he refuses to kill him.
