Assalam o 'alaykum,
Imam Shah ‘Abd al-‘Aziz Dahlawi writes while defining (‘ibadah) worship,
“Worship means to prostrate, or to circumambulate, or recite/call his name with the intention of taqarrub (seeking closeness, to approach), or to slaughter animal in his name, or to call oneself a bandah (‘Abd – slave) of someone. Any ignorant Muslim who will do this with the inhabitants of the grave, he will become kafir immediately and will be outside the fold of Islam.” (Fatawa ‘Azizi, 1:45)
So the following fall under ‘ibadah (worship):
1. To perform sajdah to the creation;
2. To perform tawaf around the graves;
3. To call the inhabitants of the graves or to recite their names to seek their taqarrub, like reciting 'Ya Shaykh ‘Abd al-Qadir al-Jaylani shay’an lillah‘ and ‘Ya Khawaja Shams al-Din al-Panipati shay’an lillah' to seek their taqarrub or aid;
4. To slaughter animals in someone’s name;
5. Or to call oneself a bandah [‘Abd] of any creation, like ‘Abd al-Mustafa, ‘Abd al-Husayn, etc.

Dear Sa'ad, I would like to request a clarification regarding the last line about calling oneself 'Abd al Mustafa and 'Abd al Husayn. Is it unrestricted in scope and does every person who does this, even if it is out of excessive love and even if he does not use the word 'Abd in the sense of worship but in the fashion in which slaves were called before the Prophet(saws) stopped the Companions from doing so become a Kaafir?
I would like to copy something that I posted on this forum earlier for daleel. Although it deals with the word 'ghulam', some of the ahadith used for evidence will overlap. WS.
