Proper of way saying salam

وَإِذَا جَآءَكَ ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِـَٔايَـٰتِنَا فَقُلۡ سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَيۡكُمۡ*ۖ كَتَبَ رَبُّكُمۡ عَلَىٰ نَفۡسِهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَةَ*ۖ أَنَّهُ ۥ مَنۡ عَمِلَ مِنكُمۡ سُوٓءَۢا بِجَهَـٰلَةٍ۬ ثُمَّ تَابَ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦ وَأَصۡلَحَ فَأَنَّهُ ۥ غَفُور...ٌ۬ رَّحِيمٌ۬ (٥٤)

And when those who believe in Our revelations come unto thee, say: Peace be unto you! Your Lord hath prescribed for Himself mercy, that whoso of you doeth evil through ignorance and repenteth afterward thereof and doeth right, (for him) lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. (54)

Allah tells us say سَلَـٰمٌ عَلَيۡكُمۡ.

But we have added extra words in Salutation.

وَإِذَا حُيِّيتُم بِتَحِيَّةٍ۬ فَحَيُّواْ بِأَحۡسَنَ مِنۡہَآ أَوۡ رُدُّوهَآ*ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىۡءٍ حَسِيبًا (٨٦)

When ye are greeted with a greeting, greet ye with a better than it or return it. Lo! Allah taketh count of all things. Sura al Nisa' verse 86.

Imam Bukhari and Muslim reported that the Prophet (S.A.W.) said, "When Allah created Adam he told him to go and say Assalamu Alaikum to a group of Angels and listen to their reply. It is your greeting and the greeting of your descendants. Adam went and said: Assalamu Alaikum. They said 'Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatulah'."

The complete form for the Islamic greeting is Assalamu Alailkum Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barakatuh meaning peace, mercy, and blessings be upon from Allah (S.W.T.). This is because Imam Abu-Dawood and At-Tirmidhii reported in a fair hadith that a man came to the Prophet (S.A.W.) and said, "Assalamu Alaikum." The prophet responded and the man sat down. The prophet said, "Ten rewards." Another man came and said, "Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah." The prophet responded and the man sat down. The prophet said, "twenty rewards." Then another man came and said: Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullah Wa Barakatuh. The prophet responded and the man sat down. The prophet said, "thirty rewards."
