Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), said that the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said: Allah (mighty and sublime be He) will say on the Day of Resurrection:
O son of Adam, I fell ill and you visited Me not. He will say: O Lord, and how should I visit You when You are the Lord of the worlds? He will say: Did you not know that My servant So-and-so had fallen ill and you visited him not? Did you not know that had you visited him you would have found Me with him? O son of Adam, I asked you for food and you fed Me not. He will say: O Lord, and how should I feed You when You are the Lord of the worlds? He will say: Did you not know that My servant So-and-so asked you for food and you fed him not? Did you not know that had you fed him you would surely have found that (the reward for doing so) with Me? O son of Adam, I asked you to give Me to drink and you gave Me not to drink. He will say: O Lord, how should I give You to drink whin You are the Lord of the worlds? He will say: My servant So-and-so asked you to give him to drink and you gave him not to drink. Had you given him to drink you would have surely found that with Me. (Muslim)
The Hackney Winter Night Shelter (HWNS) has been running for many years helping the most vulnerable in our local community at a time of year that is very hard for them (winter). First and foremost it provides hot food and warm overnight accommodation and in the long term it provides support for issues like drug and alcohol abuse, family breakdown, financial issues etc.
Again from next month there are volunteering opportunities available from January through to March 2011 at the Shelter. Madina Masjid, Masjid e Quba, Musalla an Noor and NLMCC (so far) are also giving their support this year by advertising this initiative via their notice boards to get as many volunteers to help as possible.
Though there are a number of participating Churches in Hackney the one we (approx 15 volunteers incl scholars) volunteered at last march was St Paul’s opposite Stokenewington Police Station
I have attached a copy of a PDF which details "Ways of Volunteering", it consists of the following areas:-
The Cooking Team, 5.00 - 9.00 pm.
The Setting-up Team, 6.30 - 8.00 pm
The Welcome Team, 8.00 - 9.30 pm.
The Overnight Team, 9.30pm - 8.00 am.
The Breakfast Team, 6.00 - 8.00 am.
The shelter closes officially at 8am.
(Please look at the file as it gives a detailed breakdown of the activities involved - obviously we won’t be able to help in the prep of any haraam food nor its serving).
If you are interested please drop me an email masjidcup@gmail.com stating which date/s you are available – most likely we will be volunteering again on all the Thursday’s throughout Jan, Feb and March. You do NOT need to be from the Hackney area - anyone from any area is most welcome.
Additionally this year we’d like to see if the Muslim community can provide hot food 3 times over the three months (once per month). If there’s anyone or family or group of people or muslim organisation/s that can help with providing hot cooked food for approx 45 people once during the 3 months please drop me an email.
Please forward this email to other locals who might be interested.
Jazakallah
