Default Is my Salaah accepted if I pray behind a person who performs masah on cotton socks?

    Assalmualaykum w w,

I am fully aware of the impermissability of doing Masah on cotton socks- however I want to know what the majority of scholars say about the acceptibility of salaah - when praying behind such a person. Is the salaah 'invalid' and hence need to be repeated OR will the salaah be deemed as valid?Jazakallah- Khairun,

    Was-salamualaykum w w

This is a very delicate issue. It is not permissible to do Masah on regular cotton socks. If you have evidence that the Imaam did Masah on regular cotton socks then your Salaah will not be valid if you pray behind him. You should approach the Imaam and advice him about this issue in a dignified and kind manner. Tell him to facilitate for all the Muqtadi's.

If the wudhu is valid according to the madhab of the imaam himself, then according to the Malikis, Hanbalis and a position in the Hanafi madhab he may be followable even if the wudhu is not valid to their madhabs. Allahuahlam.

It's the same issue as praying behind imaam who prays Witr as 2+1 in Ramadaan. Check the topics.

Imaam Abu Hanifah (rahimahullâh) said: "Stick to the narrations and the way of the salaf, and beware of the newly invented matters for all of it is innovation" (Sawnul Muntaq of as-Suyuti pg.32)

Jazakallah khair. Do you have any references to any particular scholars, articles or books and what they have said on this issue- would be really useful to use for research.

We, Hanafis, have two positions in our school - (1) For our Salah to be valid, Imaam must observe rules of Salah according to us [in the Fard and Wajib acts of Salah]. (2) It is not necessary for Imaam to keep our Madhhab in mind and observe our Madhhabs rules in order for our Salah to be valid.

I will ask Mufti Ebrahim Desai tommorow which view is the one that we must follow.
