Du'aas a person reads are never in vain. There is always Allah's hikmat behind everything that happens. It could be that if someone had not read the duaas etc that the effects of the black majic would have been worse.

However it should also be taken into notice that there are some people whose du'aas are not accepted, eg the person who consumes haraam food.

Dua is always accepted. When we say "accepted" we mean manifest, why arent our duas being physically manifested? Duas are either manifested physically but this depends on wisdom if its beneficial to physically manifest it for the person or not, or they are held to be given reward in hereafter or some calamity is averted in place of duas.

This of course is if the person making dua fulfills the requirements of accepted dua as some that Sudoku mentioned.

Most generous of mankind, I have no one to take refuge in,
Except you at the occurrence of widespread calamity.

Maybe our dua's aren't sincere enough.

i think it black magic could happen to anyone, even the most pious muslim. it may be a test to see how strong your imaan is, and in the end if it has gone that it can only strengthen your imaan. my cousin returned from Pakistan about a year ago and her family members said she was not well and another family member had done black magic on her. when she came to my house to visit my grandma and granddad [may Allah allow him to rest in peace and grant him janatul fidouse] she seemed so lifeless. i gave her a hug and it felt like i was just hugging a wall. she sat next to my granddad and she wouldn't respond to anyone's comments unless you spoke to her really loudly. her eyes made her seem so lost. after drinking water, which an imaam had read verses of the quraan on, she stretched and it was as though something was escaping from inside her. i couldn't watch her anymore so i went out of the room crying [i was only 13 at the time. i'm 14 now]. now she is alhamdulllah, much better however my auntie says that she has spoken to the jinns inside her and said that someone has sent them to kill her, however they do not want to as they have now bonded with her.
she isn't the most pious muslim but my reason for sharing this story is that although i was at such a young age, it warned me and taught me a lot about Islam and has mashallah strengthened my imaan and belief in Allah. my auntie said my cousin is back to normal now mashallah.

Of course it can. Who could possibly be more pious than Rasulullah ? Yet black magic afflicted him as well.

One should make it a habit to recite the last 2 Quls and Ayatul Kursi continously.

I personally know of an extremely close family member who is pious. She had developed a bad case of double vision as well as other eyesight problems along with nightmares and a bad case of tinitus. A proper 'aamil analyzed the situation said she had sihr on her. Alhamdu Lillah with constant recitation of manzil, surah saffat etc, the major effect of the sihr went away, although she still has tinitus. May Allah Ta'aala keep us safe from Nazr, jealousy and hatred of people. Ameen.

my mum tells me to recite 4 quls and ayatul kursi, surat mulk and surat sajdah before i go to bed every night. i think overall if you witness black magic it really changes your view on many things and can boost your imaan. in school if i recieve good grades i even ask my non-muslim friend to say because nazr is a quite common thing these days and it is best to avoid it.
