    Default Gc instrument did not detect alcohol in coca-cola, pepsi & 7 up

    Assalam O Alaikum

    From our website:

    GC INSTRUMENT DID NOT DETECT ALCOHOL IN COCA-COLA, PEPSI & 7 UP

    Muslim Consumer Group is the first Muslim consumer organization who spent money to conduct alcohol analysis of soft drinks in the USA.

    Muslim Consumer Group asked Northland Laboratories (Northbrook, IL), one of the top food analysis laboratories in USA, to buy Coca-Cola, Pepsi and 7 up from the supermarket to analyze alcohol content by using the official method of AOAC (Association of Official Analytical Chemists) number 973.23 Modified on the Gas Chromatography instrument.

    Northland Lab did not find any alcohol peak on the chromatograph and reported the following results.

    Name of Analyte: Alcohol by Gas Chromatography Instrument

    Unit: Percent By Volume

    Sample Description Result

    Coca-Cola 2 Liter

    Code:May0911RXC16452 Less Than <0.05%

    Pepsi 2 Liter Less Than <0.05%

    Code: May23111410G022612

    7 UP 2 Liter Less Than <0.05%

    Code:12441A.05B10949NL7

    METHOD DETECTION LIMIT OF GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY INSTRUMENT IS 0.05%

    In layman terms, the results indicate zero alcohol in all three soft drinks.

    MCG has consulted with one of our Islamic Scholars, Mufti Mohsin Muki of Chicago Muslim Sunni Society Chicago, IL about the lab results. He recommended and MCG agreed that Muslims can drink Coca-Cola and Pepsi based on the analytical results of zero alcohol. Both Coca-Cola and Pepsi refused to answer the question of whether alcohol is used in natural flavors because of proprietary information.

    MCG and our Islamic Scholar consider Coca-Cola and Pepsi as Halal soft drinks.

    But on other hand, 7 UP informed us in an e-mail that most of the flavors in their products are designed with a carrier that is usually ethanol (Alcohol). Therefore, MCG and our Islamic Scholar agreed that although there is no alcohol in 7 UP according to the GC instrumentation, we still consider 7 UP as not Halal based on ethanol carrier in natural flavors.

    We leave the decision of consuming 7 UP to Muslims. If any Muslims ask our opinion, we will not recommend the 7 UP because of information in the e-mail.

    JazakAllah Rasheed bhai.. One suggestion if you dont mind, I would copy/paste your post onto the other threads regarding this same topic, as your stance was not the same for Coca Cola in the past. Your dedication and time spent on this to clarify the matters will be greatly rewarded,

    Assalam O Alaikum Br. Adeel Saheb,

    Yes, you can post on any website. Regarding my previous stand on Coca Cola was based on the news report on internet about revealing the formula and I did it for cautious because Pepsi was still Halal at that time.

    i thought that ethanol is acceptable depending on the amount and purpose of usage?

    also, what about slight traces of natural alcohol found in fruit? is that a different matter? please explain.

    so is 0.05% of alcohol classed as non alcohol?

    if other drinks had such a amount of alcohol,they would be ok to consume?

    Question:
    Synthetic Alcohol is not najis
    Answer:
    In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

    In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful, and all blessings and peace upon our master Muhammad, his Folk, Companions and those who follow their noble way,

    Assalamu alaikum,

    According to the Indian Hanafi scholars, the fatwa in our times is that synthetic alcohols (and all alcohol not considered 'khamr') is tahir, and permitted to use and consume AS LONG AS:
    (a) it is not used as an intoxicant;
    (b) it is not used as intoxicants as used (i.e. for alcoholic consumption, even a little);
    (c) it is not used in an amount that intoxicates;
    (d) it is not used in vain (lahw).

    This was Mufti Mahmoud Ashraf Usmani's explanation, and it is supported by many fatwas in the great Indian Hanafi fatwa references of the 20th Century. This is the position of Imam Abu Hanifa himself. Later scholars said that the fatwa was on the position of Imam Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani, Abu Hanifa's student, that all alcohol is najis and haram, even in small quantities, because of widespread fitna. In our times, because of the widespread use of alcohol in all sorts of things, it has become very difficult to avoid. This is why great Hanafis of our times gave the abovementioned fatwa.

    Wassalam,
    Faraz Rabbani.

    Assalam O Alaikum

    Muslim Consumer Group is the first Muslim organization in USA to spend money to analyze soft drinks to find out if alcohol is present, for the benefit of Muslim consumers in USA and Canada .

    Alcohol is present naturally in all ripe fruits and vegetable. It is based on natural biosynthesis of plants. Similarly yeast which is used in baking bread and Nan in its non active form do not contain alcohol but during fermentation an enzyme called Zymase which was inactive until the right condition of temperature moisture at fermentation was leached out from yeast cells and break single sugar available from starch of flour into CO2, water, alcohol other volatile organic compounds but this alcohol is evaporated during baking in the oven. This naturally produced alcohol is acceptable in Islam.

    Every instrument is capable of detecting of chemical component at minimum level and if anything go bellow that minimum level or cannot detect any thing then all labs including clinical labs do not report results as zero but report result as less than whatever instrument can detect and it is automatically consider as zero value. Similarly Gas Chromatography can detect alcohol minimum at 0.05% if there is no peak of alcohol present on chromatograph then every lab do not report zero but less than 0.05% which means zero in layman term.

    Khamr is a drink of many things including alcohol, so alcohol is not khamr but part of khamr. Alcohol was discovered after Imam Abu Hanifa RA by a Muslim Iranian chemist. Imam Abu Hanifa RA ruling mentioned above is 100% correct but it is for a drink not for alcohol(Alcohol is a pure chemical and cannot be drink as 100%) the khamr from other than grape, date gives a Muslim energy to do ibadah not pleasure. Today there is also a drink or non khamr available in India from one of coconut type tree, it is nutritious, tasty but the problem is that you have to drink it before sunrise. As soon as sun rises the yeast, bacteria in the drink start fermenting the sugar and very soon it became intoxicant non khamr. Ulema should use some word for non khamr because in food industry synthetic alcohol is the ethyl alcohol obtained from other than fermentation of sugar.
