    بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The following is a description of the True Believers that is the Companions of the Prophet (saw), the SAHABAH by Hasan Al Basri (rahimahullah). Taken from the english translation of : Saviours of Islamic Spirit-By Sheikh Abul Hasa Ali Nadvi.

    Description of the Sahabah

Hasan Al Basari comparing the moral conditions of his own times with that of the Prophet's companions and delineating(outlining) the Islamic ethics, he observes:

"Alas, people have gone to rack and ruin through their own fond hopes and daydreams, they talk but do not act; knowledge is there but without endurance, faith they have, but no conviction, men are here, but without brains; a crowd here is , but not a single soul agreeable to one's heart; people come here simply to go away; they acknowledge the truth , then deny it and make things lawful and unlawful at their sweetwill. Is your religion a sensual delight? If you are asked 'Do you have faith in the Day of Judgment?' You say: 'Yes' But , No, it is not so! I swear by the Lord o the Day of Requital that your answer is wrong.
It's only beseeming(matching) for the faithful that he should be sound of faith and a man of conviction, his knowledge entails forbearance(patience) as moderation is an adornment for the learned. He is wise but soft-hearted, well dressed and restrained in order to conceal his indegenre, never prodigal(extravagant) even if a man of substance, charitable and compassionate to the destitute, large-hearted and generous in giving to the kinsfolk their due, strenuous and unflinching in providing justice to others; never crosses the prescribed limits in favoring his near and dear ones not does he find fault or cull out the errors of those whom he dislikes. A Muslim is indifferent to revilings and taunting, frolics and sports, decrials and backbitings. He never runs after what is not his right nor denies what he owes to others, never debases himself in seeking an apology nor takes delight in the misfortune or misdeed of others."

" Humble and submissive, devoted and enchanted, as a faithful is in his prayers, he is a messenger of cheer, his endurance is owing to the awe of Allah; his silence is for meditation and reflection; he pays attention for edification and instruction; he seeks company of the learned for acquiring knowledge; keeps mum to avoid transgression; and if he speaks, he speaks to spread the virtue. A Muslim is pleased when he acts virtuously; entreats forgiveness from the Lord when he goes astray, complains when he is aggrieved only to make for the loss sustained; is patient and prudent when an illiterate joins issue with him; proves enduring when ill-treated, he is never unjust and never seeks succor or protection from anyone save Allah the Almighty."

" Dignified in the company of their friends, praising Allah when they were left alone, content with the lawful gains. Grateful when easy of means. resigned when in distress. remembering Allah Almighty among the indolent(inactive) and craving the grace of Allah when among the pious. Such were the companions of the Prophet(saw), their associates and friends. No matter what station they occupied in life. they were held in high esteem by their compatriots and when they died, their spirit took flight to the blessed Companionship on High, as the most celebrated souls. O' Muslims, these where your righteous ancestors, but when you deviated from the right path, Allah Almighty too withheld his blessings from you. ' Lo' Allah changeth not the condition of a folk until they (first) change that which is in their hearts, and if Allah willeth misfortune for a fold there is none that can repel it, nor have they a defender beside Him.' (Ar-Ra'd-11)"

Allaah was well pleased with the Mu'mineen (the Sahabah) when
they pledged their allegiance to you (Rasulullaah [Saw]) beneath the tree (at
Hudaybiyya)Allah knew what was in their hearts, sent tranquility to
them (causing them to accept Allah commands without hesitation) and
rewarded them with a victory close at hand (when they conquered Kaaybar soon
after signing the Treaty of Hudaybljyah) and (Allah will also reward
them with) abundant spoils of war that they will take (after conquering Kaaybar).
    Allaah always Mighty, wise.
    (surah Fatah, verse 18, 19)

Narrated Abu Said (raa): The Prophet (saws) said,
“Do not abuse my companions (raa) for if any one of you spent gold equal to Uhud (in Allah’s Cause) it would not be equal to a Mudd or even a half Mudd spent by one of them.”

Hadhrat Siddiq Akbar's sacrifices were also such that whoever hears about them is left surprised.
In the ninth year of Hijri, Rasulullaah (SallAllaahu alayhi wasallam) was informed that the Romans were mustering forces to assail the Muslims. On receiving this news Rasulullaah (SallAllaahu alayhi wasallam) also instructed that preparations be under-taken. An army of 30,000 Muslims was made ready.
The condition due to the lack of equipment was such that 18 people had to share one conveyance. There was a shortage of food and water. They survived by chewing the leaves of trees. When Rasulullaah (SallAllaahu alayhi wasallam) appealed for contributions Hadhrat Umar (RadhiAllaahu-anhu) though "This is an excellent opportunity. Siddiq Akbar perpetually supercedes me in doing noble works. I will sacrifice half my household possessions to Rasulullaah (SallAllaahu alayhi wasallam)."
Hadhrat Umar (RadhiAllaahu-anhu) approached Rasulullaah (SallAllaahu alayhi wasallam) with his possessions, money, utensils, and goods. So Rasulullaah (SallAllaahu alayhi wasallam) asked: "Umar! What have you left behind at home?" He answered: "O Rasul of Allaah! Half of my belongings are at home, and half before you".
But when Hadhrat Siddiq Akbar (RadhiAllaahu-anhu) possessions and wealth arrived , and Rasulullaah
(SallAllaahu alayhi wasallam) inquired :"Abu Bakr! What have you left behind at home?" He answered: "Allaah and his Rasul-, I am sacrificing everything in the Path of Allaah."

Why do you agitate about life, goods and children?
When you have made him your lover then you have acquired both the worlds.
What can both the worlds do - they only aspire for you?
Hadhrat Umar (RadhiAllaahu-anhu) used to remark : "Even on this opportunity I could not match Hadhrat Siddiq (RadhiAllaahu-anhu)."

Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Mas'ood (ra)once said to the people, "Although you people fast more often, perform more salaah and make more effort, the companions of Rasulullaah (saw) were better than you."
When the people asked him the reason for this, he replied,
"Because they had less concern for this world and more concern for the Aakhirah."

Description of 4 Righteous Khalifas by the Sahaba

When Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Abbaas (ra) was seated, Hadhrat Mu'aawiya
asked him, "What have you to say about Hadhrat Abu Bakr (ra) ?"
Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Abbaas replied, "May Allaah shower his mercy on Hadhrat Abu Bakr (ra) . By Allaah He ardently recited the Quraan, stayed far from deviation, avoided immodesty, prevented (people from) evil, knew his Deen well and feared (disobeying) Allaah. He engaged in Ibaadah during the nights, fasted during the days, remained uncontaminated by the world and was committed to administering justice among Allaah's creation. He instructed what was good and always did what was good. He was grateful to Allaah in all conditions, engaged in Dhikr morning and evening and was hard on himself in matters relevant to reformation. He excelled ahead of his companions in terms of piety, contentment, abstinence, chasteness, virtue, caution, self-discipline and in repaying people for the good they do. May Allaah curses up to the Day of Qiyaamah be on those who deride him."

Hadhrat Mu'aawiya(ra) then asked, "What have you to say about Hadhrat Umar bin Khattaab (ra)?
Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Abbaas (ra) replied, "May Allaah shower his mercy on Abu Hafs (Hadhrat Umar (ra) ). By Allaah he was a great supporter of Islaam, protector of the orphans, a treasure chest of Imaan and a shelter for the weak. By Allaah He was truly a sanctuary for the pious, a fortress for Allaah creation and an ally to every person. With fortitude and confidence in Allaah he established Allaah's True Deen until the time came when Allaah made the Deen of Islaam dominant and subjugated many lands. Allaah's name was then mentioned in every direction, every hill and every spring in many parts of the world. He displayed exceptional tolerance when people spoke offensively, was always grateful to Allaah during times of hardship and times of ease and engaged in the Dhikr of Allaah at every moment. May Allaah's curse until the Day of Qiyaamah follow the person who harbours enmity for him."

Hadhrat Mu'aawiya (ra) then continued, "What do you have to say about Hadhrat Uthmaan bin Affaan (ra) ?
Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Abbaas(ra) replied, "May Allaah shower his mercy on Abu Amr (Hadhrat Uthmaan (ra) ). By Allaah He was an extremely honourable son-in-law (of Rasulullaah (saw)) who kept the company of pious people and was among the most unfaltering soldiers. He stayed awake (performing Tahajjud salaah) for nights on end and wept excessively when engaging in Allaah's Dhikr. Throughout the day and night he remained thoughtful about matters of importance, always ready to do anything of virtue and never tiring of completing anything that would lead to salvation. Among his noble traits was that he stood firmly against every calamity and was the generous sponsor of the Muslim army (especially during the Tabook expedition) and the sponsor of the well (the well of Rooma which he bought from a Jew and donated it to the Muslims). After all, he was the husband of two of Rasulullaah saw ' s daughters. May remorse until the Day of Qiyaamah follow who the person speaks ill of him."

    Thereafter, Hadhrat Muawaiya (ra) asked
Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Abbaas (ra) , "What have you to say about Hadhrat Ali bin Abi Taalib (ra)? "
The reply was, "May Allaah shower His mercy on Abu Hasan (Hadhrat Ali (ra) ). By Allaah He was a standard-bearer of knowledge, a fortune of piety, a stronghold of intelligence and a mountain of good. He was a light to those walking in the pitch darkness and an unrelenting caller to the great straight path. Hadhrat Ali (ra) possessed profound knowledge of the earlier scriptures, propagated the teachings of the Qur'aan and always imparted excellent advice. He always clung to the ways of guidance and stayed far from injustice, causing harm to others and from everything destructive. He was the best of those who possessed Imaan and Taqwa and the leader of all those who dressed in sewn garments or in unstitched shawls. He was the most noble of those who performed Hajj and Sa'ee, the most magnanimous of those who administered justice and equity and the most eloquent of people save for the Ambiyaa and the chosen Rasool of Allaah (saw). He was also among those early Muslims who performed salaah facing towards both Qiblas (the Kabah and Baytul Maqdas). Can there be any monotheist equal to him? He was the extremely fortunate one to marry the best of women (Hadhrat Faatima (ra) ) and was the father of the two noble grandsons (of Rasulullaah saw). My eyes have never seen anyone like him and will never see anyone of his calibre until the Day of Qiyaamah, which is the Day of Meeting. May the curses of Allaah and the curses of every servant of Allaah until the Day of Qiyaamah be on the one who curses him."

Rasullullah (saw) invites Abu Bakr (ra) to Islam.

Hadhrat Aa'isha (ra) narrates that her father Hadhrat Abu Bakr (ra) was a close friend of Rasulullaah (saw) even during the Period of Ignorance. One day, Hadhrat Abu Bakr (ra) left home to meet Rasulullaah(saw). When he met Rasulullaah(saw), he said, "O Abul Qaasim why is it that you are no longer present in the gatherings of your people? Why do they accuse you of speaking ill of their forefathers?" Rasulullaah (saw) said, "I am the Rasul of Allaah and am calling you towards Allaah." As soon as Rasulullaah (saw) had completed, Hadhrat Abu Bakr (ra) accepted Islaam.

[ Haafidh Abul Hasan Tarablasi as quoted in Al Bidaayah wan Nihaayah (vo1.3 Pg.29)]

According to another narration, Rasulullaah (saw) said, "Everyone I called to Islaam expressed some hesitation and doubts except Abu Bakr. When I mentioned Islaam to him, he neither hesitated nor expressed any doubts (but accepted immediately) ."

[Ibn Is'haaq narrating from Muhammad bin Abdir Rahmaan bin Abdillaah bin Husayn Tameemi.]

    Rasulullaah Invites Hadhrat Umarto Islaam

Hadhrat Abdullaah bin Mas'ood narrates that Rasulullaah once prayed to Allaah saying, "O Allaah! Strengthen Islaam by means of either Umar bin Khattaab or Abu Jahal bin Hishaam." Allaah accepted the du'aa in favour of Hadhrat Umar and made him a means of strengthening the foundations of Islaam and of destroying the idols.

Hadhrat Aslam narrates that Hadhrat Umar once said to them, "Do you want to hear about how 1 came into the fold of Islaam?"
When those present begged to be informed, Hadhrat Umar said,
"I was one of the people most opposed to Rasulullaah . I once came to him as he sat in a house near Safa and sat before him. Taking hold of my collar, Rasulullaah said, ' O son of
Khattaab! Accept Islaam." He then prayed for me saying, 'O Allaah! Guide him.' I then said, 'I testify that there is none worthy of worship but Allaah and I testify that you are the Rasul of Allaah.' The Muslims present there exclaimed, 'Allaahu Akbar!' so loudly that it was heard in the streets of Makkah."

    Rasulullaah Invites Hadhrat Uthmaan

Hadhrat Amr bin Uthmaan reports that Hadhrat Uthmaan said, "I was once visiting my aunt Arwa bint Abdil Muttalib (my mother's sister) when Rasulullaah arrived there. I began staring at him because in those days there was some mention of his Nabuwaat. Turning to me, he asked, 'What seems to be the matter, O Uthmaan?' I replied, 'I am surprised that there is so much talk about you when you are such an honourable among us.' Rasulullaah said, 'Laa Ilaaha Illallaah'. Allaah is witness to the fact that I shuddered at this. Rasulullaah then began reciting.
In the sky (in the "Lowhul Mahfoodh' is (the record of) your sustenance (its time, type and quantity) and (records ofl what you have been promised (of Qiyaamah)(The time for Qiyaamah has been fixed
but has not been made known to man.) By the Rabb of the sky and the earth, this (coming of Qiyaamah) is certainly the truth just as (it is true that) you can speak.
    (Surah Dhaariyaat, verses 22,23)
hereafter, Rasulullaah stood up and left. I left after him, met him and accepted Islaam."

Rasulullaah Invites Hadhrat Ali bin Abi Taalib to Islaam

Ibn Is'haaq narrates that Hadhrat Ali came to Rasulullaah while Rasulullaah and Hadhrat Khadeeja were performing salaah.
Ali asked Rasulullaah ,"O Muhammad! What is this?"
"This is the Deen of Allaah that He has chosen and for which He has sent His Ambiyaa. I call you towards the One Allaah Who has no partner. I call you to worship Him Alone and to renounce both Laat and Uzza."
Hadhrat Ali responded by saying, "I have never heard of anything like this before. I cannot decide anything until I speak to Abu Taalib." Since Rasulullaah disliked that his secret should be
exposed until he made an open declaration to the people, he said to Hadhrat Ali (anhu) "O Ali! If you are not going to accept Islaam, keep this a secret."
Hadhrat Ali (anhu) spent the night in this condition (without telling anyone) and Allaah inspired him with the urge to accept Islaam. Early next morning, he set out to meet Rasulullaah (saw). When he met Rasulullaah (saw), he said, "What was it that you presented to me, O Muhammad?".
Rasulullaah (saw):replied, "That you testify that there is none worthy of worship but the One Allaah Who has no partner and that you renounce Laat and Uzza and absolve Him from all partners." Hadhrat Ali(ra) complied and accepted Islaam and would visit Rasulullaah(saw)in privacy for fear of Abu Taalib. He concealed his acceptance of Islaam and did not make it known to anyone.
