I really want to know what the main chorus means (HadhratJi begins with it and repeats it throughout). I think the second part means:

Don't understand this annhiliation to be annihiliation - annihiliate this too O faqeer
Whoever thinks "ah yes I have annihiliated (my ego)" then he has yet not annihilated himself

Then I don't understand anything for a while (from 1:15 ish; except for what's above which is repeated)

    Then at 2:50

Do not think that your staying awake at night has made you of the Awliya (another part a Shaykh?)
[Then there's a reference to the dog awaking in the night/staying up in the night. And of the dog eating meagre pieces to eat and its relation to it's Malik - I really want to understand this part fully]

Then at 4:58 HadhratJi says the bit in Arabic which I understand (mutu qabla an tamutu - die before you die) but what does the Punjabi mean after it? Something about "coming alive"??

Then at 6:10 "why have you forgotten/do you forget your Awqaat (i.e. your true sinning self), this Wah Wah (praise) is a lie"

So what I would really appreciate in order of priority:

    1. What does the first first part mean? The bit that repeats - something about the sabaq of the Murshid.
    2. Are the translations/understanding above accurate?
    3. What's the complete story of the dog analogy?
    4. What's the translation of the whole poem!

u'mm okay... i thought somebody would have translated it entirely by now ..

Gave it a go and basically it talks about self-effacement or rather annihalation as the
brother puts it. Here Faqeer -> Begger

    1) Teach the lesson given by the murshid - obliterate yourself ! (the repetition here is just there
for the emphasis or could signify stages of decay/effacement here or due to rhyming poetry).
*this is repeated over and over again throughout*

    2) I think you got the gist of it allright. before 2.50 he talks about
how robbers have looted you on your way - or your milk have become spoiled ??

how you should be like a berry tree people use it for their tree swing or which gives out berries in return of all the stones and canes people throw at it.

    3) when you remain awake at night - don't think you are a saint
You remain awake all night but don't be very proud of your nightly vigils, even dogs do it.
He then talks about the loyality of the dogs about how they stand guard all night for thier master for
a few meagre pieces of bread. how they are better then you as they won't leave the door of their
master even after being kicked a hundred times. Stand up Bhullaih before your lord as the dogs
are better then you in this aspect as you have consumed a lot of blessings compared to them.

3.5) you are filled with rubbish and then wear nice clothes and hold these gatherings if people
would know your reality the would throw shoes at you. Then he talks about all the false applaud
you get and the arrogance and pride that comes with it.

    4) Sorry bro , that's the best i can do. Atleast you or any body else have the bare bones sketch
    to work with.

Brother Mujahid Abdullah i don't think this is an Sultan Bahu poem rather it's by Bulleh shah.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bulleh_Shah

Sorry that's all i got, the poem is too much for my plebeian tastes and my mates think my punjabi
is hilarious, it's purdu as brother abu tamim would call it.
Perhaps you should give him (Abu tamim ) a shout for a complete accurate translation.

@MujahidAbdullah: I'm not sure if the kalam is by Sultan Bahu (ra) or not - only came across it past couple days.

    @nuke

So I suppose it's clear was written by Bulleh Shah.

I think faqeer refers to the Sufi term, one who is wholly dependent on and needy of Allah. HadhratJi many times refers to himself as "this faqeer"

Bulleh Shah must be referring to himself as faqeer, or maybe teaching other fuqara?

I would say it is. When Shaykh recites the part about the dogs he says bulliah which is
a reference to Hazrat Bulleh shah and i have heard it else where as well.

and yes i am familiar with the connotations of the term Faqeer when used in sufism.
it's literal meaning is again begger but it's used as a title by shayhks and it shows their humility.
I first came across it when i read shaykh Zulfiqar's travelogue about central asia.

Sorry for being late. I tried but I guess i failed to put the real essence of the kalaam. There are some words which just cannot be translated into english.

Teach me the lesson given by the murshid O faqeer, annihilate, just annihilate yourself
Teach me the lesson given by the murshid O faqeer, annihilate, just annihilate yourself

Do not assume this annihilation as THE annihilation, rather annihilate in love O faqeer, annihilate, annihilate yourself
And if you do assume that you are annihilated, you are still not annihilated

On the way, on a dark night, you got looted
Just like dirt splashed in your milk, your milk itself is hitting ( I really didn’t understand this)
There is still time, correct yourself O faqeer, annihilate, annihilate yourself.
Teach me the lesson given by the murshid O faqeer, annihilate, annihilate yourself
Do not assume this annihilation as THE annihilation, rather annihilate in love O faqeer, annihilate, annihilate yourself

Become like a berry tree, upon whom people climb to throw shoes
Become like a berry tree, upon whom people climb to throw shoes
Even if people throw sticks and stones, you just return them with fruits O faqeer, annihilate, annihilate yourself.

Teach me the lesson given by the murshid O faqeer, annihilate, annihalate yourself
Don’t assume your awakening at nights that you are among the awliya
Even dogs are awake the entire night
You think yourself as a Shaykh if you are awake but dogs are awake too, those dogs that are better than you
You think yourself as a Shaykh if you are awake, but dogs are awake too, those dogs that are better than you
These are the dogs which eat dry and stiff piece of bread after staying awake all night, those dogs who are better than you!
Those dogs that never leave the side of their master, even if you hit them 100s of shoes, those dogs that are better than you.
Get up O bulleya, reconcile with him or else the dogs might overtake you

Don’t assume your awakening at nights that you are among the awliya
Even dogs stay awake and guard the house
For that same dry piece those dogs stay awake and you have consumed a lot of blessings
For that same dry piece those dogs stay awake and you have consumed a lot of blessings
Dogs did overtake you, now look into your own self O faqeer, and annihilate, annihilate yourself.
Teach me the lesson given by the murshid O faqeer, annihilate, annihilate yourself

Dieing of before the actual death, make it like 'your' business
Dieing of before the actual death, make it like 'your' business
The one who dies before dieing, actually becomes alive
A man is only a man if he has humanity, but man is dirty
Take the example of nabi (SAW), and tell your nafs O faqeer, annihilate, annihilate yourself
Teach me the lesson given by the murshid O faqeer, annihilate, annihilate yourself

You wear nice clothes and carry your white self (which is made out of dirt)
With so much pride and arrogance you sit in the majlis,
And if that dirt ever comes out, people will willingly throw shoes at you.
Why have you forgotten your true self, this praise is false, annihilate, annihilate yourself.
Why have you forgotten your true self, this praise is false, annihilate, annihilate yourself.

Teach me the lesson given by the murshid O faqeer, annihilate, annihilate yourself
Do not assume this annihilation as THE annihilation, rather annihilate in love O faqeer, annihilate, annihilate yourself

Here is word to word translation:

ditta murshid sabaq parha faqeera, mit mit kay mit ja
Teach me the lesson given by the murshid O faqeer, annihilate, just annihilate yourself
ditta murshid sabaq parha faqeera, mit mit kay mit ja
Teach me the lesson given by the murshid O faqeer, annihilate, just annihilate yourself

Ais mitnay noo samajena mitna, ishq may mitja faqeera mit mit kay mit ja
Do not assume this annihilation as THE annihilation, rather annihilate in love O faqeer, annihilate, annihilate yourself
Jai to samajaya mai haan mitaya, ajay wi nai tu mitaya
And if you do assume that you are annihilated, you are still not annihilated

Raad behti raah which tay nu, ucha ker kar lutiya,
On the way, on a dark night, you got looted
Chithan peygeyian dudh which teray, dudh lay tera pitaya
Just like dirt splashed in your milk, your milk itself is hitting ( I really didn’t understand this)
(-The example I think is comparing on abruptness of things going wrong. A clear white milk ready to be drunk could be spoiled in a minute by a single dirt splash in it just like your fine self, who could become a begger any minute.)

Ajay wi waelee dar murshid dey, a ker theek kera faqeera, mit mit kay mit ja fqeera.
There is still time, correct yourself O faqeer, annihilate, annihilate yourself.
Ditta murshid sabaq parha faqeera, mit mit kay mit ja
Teach me the lesson given by the murshid O faqeer, annihilate, annihilate yourself

Ais mitnay noo samajena mitna, ishq may mitja faqeera mit mit kay mit ja
Do not assume this annihilation as THE annihilation, rather annihilate in love O faqeer, annihilate, annihilate yourself

Tu ban aislik ber the boota, loki char char dewain jootha,
Become a berry tree, upon whom people climb to throw shoes
Tu ban aislik ber the boota, loki char char dewain jootha,
Become a berry tree, upon whom people climb to throw shoes

Ita rorary maran sota, tu tey pal luta faqeera mit mit kay mit ja
Even if people throw stones and sticks, you just return them with fruits O faqeer, annihilate, annihilate yourself.

Ditta murshid sabaq parha faqeera, mit mit kay mit ja
