Default Heard of Shaykh Muhammad Amin al-Shanqiti?

    salam

has anyone heard of this shaykh? i always thought he was affiliated with the salafis, because they have translated some books by him. two things make me doubt this though:

    1. he was born and raised in Mauritania, which is maliki

    2. his son is maliki according to htspub.com:

"One of the sons of Imaam Muhammad al-Amin ash-Shanqiti, Imaam Muhammad ibn al-Hasan is from Mauritania and spent much of his adult life being educated in the Arabian Peninsula. He has a firm and solid foundation in the Maaliki madhhab but also holds intimate knowledge of the Hanbali madhhab, the dominant fiqh of the Peninsula."

    but then i read this:

    http://www.al-manhaj.com/bios/shanqeeti.html

    and was left slightly confused.

the reason i ask is because Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi recommended his tafsir of the Qur'an, and stated that he wished it could be translated into English.

    assalamu alaikum

if a person is a salafi, that does not mean he is not a muslim.

besides there are many types of salafies and differ between cultures in extremes.

some top salafi scholar of our time was Shaykh Uthaymeen. I have seen one of my teachers refer to his books. doesnt mean i agree with his aqeedah

as long u speak with daleel, u will always be superior or refewr to some one with knowledge if ever confronted

    salams

i agree with what u say, but do u know the answers the questions?

i will say this, on matter of fiqh and aqida, a muqallid should not refer to a salafi scholar. your teacher, yes because he can differentiate... but the masses - not advised.

anyhow, this is not the prupose of my thread quite frankly bro!

because Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi recommended his tafsir
I look at the above quote and to me it seems like you have

an Ijaza TO READ his tafsir from Sh Yaquobi

take what is beneficial and leave what is doubtful, that is how the scholars treat ibn taimmyah also. Read his tafsir and leave the rest until you ask a scholar who knows about his other positions.

jazakallah brother. i don't mean to be rude, but all i want is an answer, thats all!!!

this is not about whether we can trust salafi's

if anything, the aim of my writing this was to show that great sufi shaykhs of today openly refer to salafi shaykhs.... something which is a step forwards and something to inform the ignorant masses.

anyway, does anyone know the answer? sidi abul hasan, where are you?!!

Many of the sheikhs who the Salafis claim as their own in Islamic history were not in fact Salafis and were firmly upon one of the four schools.

Thus, be careful. In modern times, those scholars who are Salafis are well known. However, Salafi dawah hasn't been very big for so long.

Therefore, the older scholars such as this one may not be Salafi although the Salafis consider him their own (while others may dispute with that).
