Default A Forgotten Sunnah? - New Born Baby - Tahneek? What is Tahneek?

The Following Explains What Is Tahneek And How It Should Be Done.

When And How Tahneek Is Done:
If possible, after the Azân and Iqâmah, a pious person should chew a piece of date or anything sweet and place it onto the palate of the child and request the pious person to make Du‘â for the child. This is called Tahneek.www.Askimam.org
    Tahneek The Sunnah:
Tahneek is the Sunnah of Rasulullah (Salalaahu Alayhi Wasallam). It is not necessary for the Tahneek to be done immediately after birth. It could be done after a few days as well. It is important to note that the health of the baby should also be taken into consideration. Sometimes the item on which Tahneek is made could have reverse effect on the child.

Furthermore, if you would wish for the Tahneek to take place immediately, you could request an Alim or pious person to make the Tahneek before and present it to the child after birth. It is not necessary for the person making the Tahneek to be present at the hospital.www.Askimam.org
Preferences On How Tahneek Is Carried Out:
    1. Tahneek should be performed on the day of birth. The first preference to be used for Tahneek is normal dates, then Rutab (fresh dates), then honey and then anything sweet. The method of Tahneek is to chew the date into a paste-like substance and then to apply a small amount of that paste onto the baby's palate. (Fathul Bari vol. 15 pg. 390)www.Askimam.org

Ahadith Which Proves That Tahneek Was Carried Out By Our Beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW:
Found In: Sahih Muslim Chapter No: 2, Purification (Kitab Al-Taharah)
    Hadith no: 560
    Narrated: Aisha
the wife of the Apostle (may peace be upon him) said: Babies were brought to the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) and he blessed them, and after having chewed (something, e. g. dates or any other sweet thing) he rubbed there with their soft palates. A baby was brought to him and he passed water over him (over his garment), so he asked water to be brought and sprinkled it, but he did not wash it.http://ahadith.co.uk

    , for posting this.

I was searching on IDA website yesterday for any articles on the birth of a child, but didn't come across any. Does anyone know of any online articles by Maulana Muhammad Saleem Dhorat on the subject?

Sis LFI, not sure about Shaykh Salim's article but this may be of some help. http://www.inter-islam.org/Lifestyle/CHILDBORN.html

It's extracted from a book on child birth by Maulana Bilal Rangooni. I translated it many years ago when I was still at school but it provides the basics of what to do when a child is born. Tahneek is something we've done for all our children. Mufti Abdurrahim Lajpoori sahab gave a bit of chewed date for the eldest and we used it for the three of our children.
