Default Islamic Opinion regarding living in the same home with a non-mehram

    Asalamualaykum,

I am currently seeking firm Islamic opinions regarding the following situations:

    1. My elder brother and his wife (both in their late 20's) are living in the same home with me (aged 22) and the rest of our family. Our rooms are completely seperate; however, there are times when the only people left alone in the home would be me and my sister-in law, when this happens our paths may cross occasionally when both are in the kitchen.

I would like to know what the ruling would be in the above situation. Is it wrong for us to be living under the same roof; is it wrong that we are left in the home alone; or when we are left in the home alone would it be ok if we were in seperate rooms and kept the time we crossed one another at a minimum?

    2. I am soon to move into student accommodation; I will have my own bedroom, but will be sharing the flat along with another girl and another boy. Although each of us have our own rooms, the kitchen and bathroom are shared. What is the ruling on this, is it haram for me to live there; should I avoid staying in the kitchen whenever the girl is there?

The above two issues are currently very pressing topics in my household causing various debates, therefore, sourced answers would be highly valued.
    Jazakallah'khair in advance.

If your husband is well off and he can provide his wife with a separate apartment where she can observe purdah from non-Mahrams, then it is necessary for the husband to make that arrangement for her
