is he authentic? what does that mean?
After reading your previous posts, I realize that you are from South Africa and might not have heard much about Shaykh Hamzah Yusuf. I don't recall he has ever been to South Africa. Oh well...Yes He is from Ahlus-Sunnah Wal Jamaah and I think he follows the Maliki Madhab (not sure peeps...correct me if I'm wrong...) and yes he is authentic.Originally Posted by mospike
In the past year, I have heard one moving live lecture. That was by Shaykh Hamzah Yusuf when he came over to our Masjid. I requested him to lead Maghrib prayers but he refused politely so I was the Emam. His speech was sooo practical. Many times, speakers mention Quranic verses and Ahadith but they don't apply it to the modern context and how they are applicable today. Like the Hadith he discussed about was on deriving benefit from five things before five. His commentary on the five things was amazing. It was so practical....Yeah sooo....
I really like his speeches....
From a reliable source:
That is more than good enough for me.one occasion... in Birmingham, UK, during a Q&A session at Sultan Bahu Mosque. this is on tape, when Shaykh Nuh referred to Shaykh Hamza as a wali, in reply to a questioner who had been asking about the whole post-9/11 situation with Shaykh Hamza.

For those who realize that everything is from Allah, everything is the same.

I met hamza yusuf in febuary. He is a realy neat speaker and very inspirational. But he is also very careful not to cause controversy. Im not sure about any more though cause when i saw him in febuary he spoke strongly about traditional islamic perspectives of things. Some people though who are trying to learn about traditional islam might get confused cause he praises alot ibn tamiya but take a traditional standpoint on him. One of my friends told me one of my friends wont do group dhikr cause he was told by Hamza Yusuf that is was bida'. Im assuming he meant a good bida's but he realy confused my friend i think. I think his tatic is that he draws salafis to traditional islam quitely but at the same time confuses some brothers on parts of the deen. But alhamdolilah a wonderful brother. Does anyone know what about how crediable his hisham kabbani. I met him and he was amazing and i read some of his books. BUt he and shiek Nazim seem to believe that all people will eventauly get out of the hell fire. Where I heard this is a deviated opinion. But i dont know i am not a scholar. I heard this statement when i heard Shiek Hisham's khuttba and in the book, the mystical footsteps of the saints.

<<But he is also very careful not to cause controversy.>>
true...
<<Im not sure about any more though cause when i saw him in febuary he spoke strongly about traditional islamic perspectives of things. Some people though who are trying to learn about traditional islam might get confused cause he praises alot ibn tamiya but take a traditional standpoint on him.>>
as we all should do...
<<One of my friends told me one of my friends wont do group dhikr cause he was told by Hamza Yusuf that is was bida'.>>
to confirm, Shaykh Hamza Yusuf is maliki, and Imam Malik was of the opinion that group dhikr is disliked. Some of his teachers also take that opinion. but have not seen him in group dhikr on the guidance media website video downloads section, singing the burda? if thats not group dhikr, what is??
<<Im assuming he meant a good bida's but he realy confused my friend i think. >>
good bida... makes more sense. tell your friend about the above.
<<I think his tatic is that he draws salafis to traditional islam quitely but at the same time confuses some brothers on parts of the deen.>>
he doesn't want to be seen as a sufi, anti-salafi and rather would prefer to be listened to by everyone. so what he says s true, and always quotes valid opinions.

i don't know about them having this opinion, but it is a deviated opinion, which ibn taymiyya also took.
Shaykh Hamza also has many sufi shaykhs, for example the late Shaykh Ahmad Mashhur al-Haddad being one of his main spiritual teachers, and Shaykh Muhammad al-Yaqoubi

it is also disliked to lead a prayer in a masjid where there is a regular imam (maliki maddhab).
hence even when you arrive late with your buddies for jama'a, best to pray on your own out of respect to the imam.

He is an authentic sunni scholar. I have heard his lecture and found him a lover of the Holy Prophet (SAW)..mashallah
I came across this article by Shiekh Faraz Rabbani..I hope people here will find it interesting:
Question:
I have heard Ahle Sunnah Jamaah Muslims accusing Sheikh Hamza Yusuf as being a Deviant. what is your view on this matter?
Answer:
In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate
May Allah's peace and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad, his folk, companions, and followers
The ulema I know have the highest of love, respect, and admiration for Shaykh Hamza Yusuf. There are few scholars, if any, in the West who have conveyed the guidance of Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) as far or as effectively. Thousands have been guided through his lectures and lessons. Many of those who have gone abroad to study, including this writer, did so because of the guidance and inspiration of this great man.
Shaykh Hamza also made the way of traditional Sunni Islam--with its richness, depth, tolerance, and meaningfulness--manifest in Islamic discourse in the West. Before he and a few other leading Western scholars appeared on the scene in the early 1990s, the influence traditional Sunni Islam was far less visible, especially in the major Islamic organizations, and on university campuses and in youth groups.
This has changed dramatically. Shaykh Hamza not only taught the way of traditional Islam--as represented by Sunni scholarship in beliefs, practice, and spirituality--but also explained its importance, need, wisdom, richness, relevance, and benefit, both in his words and exemplified it in his person.
Does this mean that one has to agree with the noble shaykh (may Allah preserve him and continue to shower him with His favors) in everything? No. It is rare for two humans to agree on everything. However, the way of traditional scholars is that they are respectful when they disagree even with those who are opposed to them, for such scholars are the inheritors of the Best of Creation (peace and blessings be upon him), whom Allah Himself describes as being of tremendous character & conduct.
As for disagreements of understanding among Sunni scholars, this is a manifestation of Divine Mercy. We don't say that everyone is right. However, we also respect the right of those of learning to exercise their judgement. When scholars err, other scholars correct them, and the resultant discourse enriches the community--whether by making the truth manifest, or by showing the various possible paths to the truth.
If you ask the scholars in the Arab lands--in Yemen, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Morocco, Mauritania, the Hejaz, and elsewhere--who know Shaykh Hamza, you'll find that they have only the highest of regards and praise for him.
May Allah show us the way of the Messenger of Mercy (peace and blessings be upon him). May He make us of those who are firm on the truth, and gentle & loving among ourselves, and united in agreement and in disagreement. And He alone gives success. Wassalam.

In the words of Ahmad Shawky regarding Mercy unto the Worlds, The Light Personified, The Elevated Intercessor Saiyyidina Muhammad Mustafa (Sallal Laahu Alaihi Wa Sallam):
The sun of guidance was born, and the entire universe was illumined.
A smile appeared on the lips of time, and his praises were sung.
