From the tafsir of Qur'aan Made Easy and Ma'aariful Qur'aan:

On the Day of Judgement, there will be two separate groups of people, believers and unbelievers, and their faces will be different. This verse describes the faces of the unbelievers. They will be downcast. The word khEshi'ah from the root word khusha' mean 'to humble, humiliate, cast down'. This is the meaning of casting oneself down before Allah in prayer. People who did not cast themselves down before Allah in this world, their faces on the Day of Judgement will bedowncast with humiliation and disgrace.

The other conditions of the unbelievers are 'Amilah and Nasibah. The
word 'Amilah from 'Amal means 'to work hard' and 'Amil or 'Amilah in
Arabic is used for 'a person who works continuously, so as to become
completely tired'. The word Nasibah is derived from nasab. This word also
refers to 'one who toils unceasingly so as to become totally exhausted'. It
seems that the latter two conditions of the unbelievers relate to this world,
because Hereafter is not a realm in which one has to work to become so
tired and exhausted. Therefore, Qurtubi and other commentators are of
the view that the humbleness of their faces relates to the Hereafter, but
their working hard and being exhausted refers to their work in this world.
Given this interpretation, the sense is that many unbelievers exert themselves in their false rituals, and work hard in their presumed acts of worship in the world, as for instance the Hindu Yogis and many Christian monks do. They endure many difficulties in the devotional acts of worship sincerely in order to seek the good pleasure of Allah, but being on wrong
and idolatrous ways, they are not acceptable to, or rewarded by, Allah.
Thus their faces show signs of exhaustion in this world; and in the
Hereafter they will show signs of disgrace and humiliation.

Sayyiduna Hasan Basri reports that when Sayyiduna 'Umar
went to Syria, a Christian monk came to him. He was an old man, and
on account of his religious exercises and great endeavors, his face was
exhausted, his body was dry and his dressing was miserable. When
Sayyiduna 'Umar & looked at him, he began to weep. People asked him
about the cause of his weeping. He replied: "I pity the condition of this old
man. This poor soul worked so hard and showed such readiness to lay
down his life to achieve a particular purpose (that is, to gain the pleasure
of Allah) but, alas! He could not achieve it. Then he recited the following
    verse:

Many faces on that day will be looking down (disgraced because of embarrassment and fear).

(Among these shall be) He who suffered affliction and who endured many difficulties (thinking that he was pleasing Allaah whereas his beliefs and actions did not conform with the injunctions of Allaah).

    Ghaashiyah: 2-3

    bro,

Perhaps you can change the topic and advice him to fulfill the Pillars of Islam. If he is not practicing, then encourage him to do Salat, Zakat, Fasting etc. May Allah guide him and all of us in the right path. Ameen.

as someone else has pointed out, tell your foolish friend to worry more about his status in the Hereafter than mother teresa's. If he's far from Deen he needs to pull his finger out before it's too late.

Give him the example of those not prostrating before Allah SWT in this dunya who on the Day of Judgement will have iron from Jahannam inserted into their backs so as to prevent prostration on that Day. Does he want this for himself? Humiliation on the Day of Judgement?

Tell him to get a grip on reality in this Mubarak month rather than worrying about someone else.

If he still wants to carry on his excuse of not fulfilling Allah's commandments, leave him be.

Are non-Muslims condemned to Hell even if they did good and seem to have been genuinely pious?

    Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Are non-Muslims condemned to Hell even if they did good and seem to have been genuinely pious?

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

May Allah's peace and blessings be upon His Messenger Muhammad, his folk, companions, and followers

    Walaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

I pray that this finds you well, and in the best of health and spirits. May Allah grant you all good and success in this life and the next. Please keep me in your duas.

Allah Most High tells us in the Qur'an,

"Whoever seeks a religion other than Islam will never have it accepted from him, and shall be of those who have truly failed in the next life." (Qur'an 3:85)

This is conditioned by His words,

"We do not punish until We send a Messenger." (Qur'an 17:15)

Shaykh Adib Kallas, a leading Damascene scholar and theologian, put it very well:

"We know that those who reject faith (man aba) are in Hell. It is not decisively established what exactly entails rejection of faith -- this is why the scholars of Sunni Islam differed. As for the details, we should concern ourselves with our own fate: Allah will ask us about ourselves, not about what He should do with others."

Ultimately, if (a) the message of Islam reached someone; and (b) they rejected it, then the verses and hadiths about being eternally in Hell would apply. At the level of individuals, it is a major question as to what reaching and rejecting entail. This is why we cannot judge whether individual non-Muslims are in Hell -- or, for that matter, in Heaven.

Rather, we consign their affair to Allah the Merciful and Just, while affirming the above.
