    Default Wives of Ali (ra)

    As Salaamu Alaikum All

    I had a question.

How many wives did Sayyidna Ali (ra) Have while married to fatima az zahra(ra) ?
I ask this because i always assumed he (ra) was only married to fatima (ra) at the time, and the hadith below states otherwise.

    Bukhari
    Volume 3, Book 47, Number 784:

    Narrated 'Ali:

The Prophet gave me a silken dress as a gift and I wore it. When I saw the signs of anger on his face, I cut it into pieces and distributed it among my wives."
I might be mistaken or something or the hadith might be mistranslated.
    Just need some clarifacation.

    Jazakallah khair

    Wsalaam

i think the hadeeth may be mis-translated
Someone asked him "pray for Allah to curse the unbelievers." He said, "I was not sent to curse but as a Mercy''
    Peace be upon him

    Make dua for me please

I'll look for the hadith in arabic and post it if i can, but if anyone has the correct translation it would help alot. ?
This is from bukhari and alot of anti-hadith people are after me for it lol.

    Jazakallah once again

It may be there it ought to be translated as "womenfolk" (since Ali RA had female slaves too) but it was translated as wives. The translation at the MSA site is not a reliable one so this is rather like a christian taking Sale's mistranslation of the Quran and trying to refute Islam with it If the pervaizis are trying to prove something, they are the ones who ought to bring the original text. At least they should say which kitab and which bab of Sahih Bukhari this hadeeth is under.

    Okay jazakallah bro.
I'll still try to get an arabic version of it inshallah.
Maybe even write to msa and tell them to change it to the more appropriate wording.

    Salamu Alaikum

The correct translation - in my opinion - should be, "among my womenfolk" like Sidi Muawiyah stated. The Arabic of the Hadith states:

    وجهه فشققتها بين ‏ ‏نسائي
And we all know that the word "Nisa" does not mean "wife".

This is not referring to "slaves" as Ibn Hajar states in his discussion (Kitab Al Libas) but rather his close family.

In some of the narrations it states, such as Abi Salih's:

    " بين الفواطم "
    and Ibn Qutayba stated:

المراد بالفواطم فاطمة بنت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وفاطمة بنت أسد بن هاشم والدة علي ولا أعرف الثالثة
that by Al Fawateem (the Fatimahs) Fatimah daughter of the Prophet and Fatimah bint Asad are meant. The third name he states he does not know.

Abu Mansur al Azhari stated that the third was Fatimah bint Hamzah.

وذكر أبو منصور الأزهري أنها فاطمة بنت حمزة بن عبد المطلب
This was stated by Imam Tahawi, Ibn Abil Dunya in his Kitab Al Hidaya and Ibn 'Abd Al Barr. However, this narration mentions Sayyidina 'Ali stating he gave the silk garments to four people, or four of them.

فقال عياض لعلها فاطمة امرأة عقيل بن أبي طالب
Qadhi Iyadh states that perhaps this fourth person is Fatimah, of Aqil ibn Abi Talib.

But it is certainly true that none of the above were Sayyidina 'Ali's wives, but his close family.

    Wasalam
