Yep, good question. I've heard this phrase (or similar) used by non-muslims many times but I've never come across it in islamic literature.

    Where did it come from?

    I find this interesting...wow
In the words of Ahmad Shawky regarding Mercy unto the Worlds, The Light Personified, The Elevated Intercessor Saiyyidina Muhammad Mustafa (Sallal Laahu Alaihi Wa Sallam):

The sun of guidance was born, and the entire universe was illumined.

A smile appeared on the lips of time, and his praises were sung.

The legend goes that when the founder of Islam was asked to give proofs of his teaching, he ordered Mount Safa to come to him. When the mountain did not comply, Mohammed raised his hands toward heaven and said, 'God is merciful. Had it obeyed my words, it would have fallen on us to our destruction. I will therefore go to the mountain and thank God that he has had mercy on a stiff-necked generation.' The saying has been traced back in English to 'Essays,' (1625) by English philosopher Frances Bacon (1561-1626). It was included in John Ray's book of English proverbs in 1678. First attested in the United States in 'Jonathan Belcher Papers' (1733). In German, the phrase translates as 'Wenn der Berg nicht zum Propheten kommt, mu?der Prophetzum Berg kommen." From "Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings" (1996) by Gregory Y. Titelman (Random House, New York, 1996).
So does that mean it is true or what?

Well, if you're saying that's the origin of the phrase, then aren't you saying that kafirs made it up???

Akhi Gajji why should an 'Alim verify something that is asserted by a detractor of Islam to show our beloved Prophet (PBUH) in bad light? More appropriate action will be to demand an explanation from the inheritors of Francis Bacon to show as to why he indulged in this calumny.

    Assalamu Alikum

I recently heard someone say that this saying is not about the Rasul Sallalahu Alayhi Wasalam, but about another Muhamad, maybe a King. I will have to ask him again.

This seems to be an unlikely possibility and in all probability looks like an escape route devised either by the obnoxious person himself or his defenders. But I am curious to know more details.
