Mawlana Mansur ‘Ali Khan wrote of his beloved teacher, Mawlana Muhammad Qasim Nanautwi (may Allah shower His mercy upon them):

‘‘Allah Most High had favoured the late Mawlana with piety, asceticism, gnosis, tasawwuf, generosity, bravery, good character, and sound intellect, to which there seemed no end.’’

    Madh-hab-e-Mansur, quoted in Maqalat-e-Hakim al-Islam, p. 401-402 (Karachi: Idaratul Ma‘arif, Jumada ‘l-Ula 1427 / June 2006 ed.)

Abdullah ibn Mubarak (ra) was once fighting in a war for Islam. When it was time for Salat, he went to a river nearby, tied his horse and made wudu. By the time he finished Salat, the horse had wandered to a nearby field and ate the crops. Abdullah ibn Mubarak (ra) was very disheartened as the horse ate the crops without the permission of the fields Owner. He then insisted the owner to keep the horse. And he got another horse and said he cannot strive in the way of Allah on a horse that has consumed what did not belong to it.

The Alamgir Wisdom of Sultan Alamgir Aurangzeb

The incident belongs to the times of Sultan Alamgir . That during the times of Alamgir (rah), Ulema dwelt in such rank misery that there was none to look after them. being an Alim himself, Alamgir (rah) knew the greatness of ahl-e- ilm. He did not publish any sermon in newspapers calling people to care for the Ulema..

Instead he devised this strategy that when the time for salah approached, he said that today he desires that such a governor of a state who is the Nawab of Deccan should perform his wudhu. The governor of Deccan after sending seven salutations expressed his joy saying it was indeed such a great honour that the emperor ordered him to perform his wudhu.. he understood this as a token that he was about to receive a Jagir.. that the emperor seems very pleased..
Nawab sahab was quick to fill the jug of water and was about to make wudhu…

Alamgir (rah) asked him about the Faraiz of wudhu,.. now if only did Nawab sahab make wudhu even once in his entire life would he knew.. he was taken a back..! what shall he answer.. asked him how many wajibaat does it have ..? and he knew nothing about.. asked him how many Sunnah of wudhu..? there was no answer..

Alamgir (rah) said it is very sad that you govern a hundred thousand people .. rule over a hundred thousand necks.. and your name being Muslim… that you don’t even know the faraiz..wujoob and sunnah of Wudhu.. Iam hopeful that henceforth I shall not see such a face again..

And he treated another one such that in the month of Ramadhan he said: “Today you shall join me at iftar...” to which he replied: “your highness this is such a great honour…else how can this faqeer be so fortunate enough to be remembered by the emperor..”.

At the time of iftar he asked him : “Tell me.. Mufsidaat sawm.. due to which a sawm becomes fasid… How many are they..?”

Incidently, he never even once fasted.. never knew what the breachers of fast are in the first place .. and he kept quite.. what could he answer..!

Alamgir (rah) said that it was very shameful that you are known as a governor.. Ameer.. and Nawab.. that thousands of people follow your orders.. being a Muslim... a ruler.. and you don’t even know what are the actions that breach a fast..?!

Similarly, he asked someone on the masa’il of zakat.. and he dint receive an answer, to another he asked about Hajj and so on.. .. such that everyone failed to answer. Alamgir (rah) reprimanded each one that it should not be repeated again..

Now when these governors returned back, they felt the dire need to learn the masail and a search for Ulema began… the Ulema now began to raise their demands... Some pressed for Five hundred rupees as salary... And they were pampered saying ‘ Huzoor ..! we shall readily pay you a thousand..’. ofcourse they would not risk losing the Jagirs. Even then the Ulema were not available and a nation wide search was on. Even those students still pursuing studies of deen were hired on huge salaries.. and thus all these governors and ruling class became aware of the masail of deen and they turned towards practicing on deen..

This story is also there in this section:

Some moments before the death of Hazrath Masihullah Khan of Jalalabad, India

I'm sharing you one of the most emotional and beautiful moments before the death of Shaykh Masihullah Khan Sahab (of Jalalabad , India). I heard this in the yesterday's Friday sermon from Mufti Tajammul Hussain Sahab( of hyderabad, India).

Mufti Sahab said that he was present at the time of hazrath's death and people who were near to him explained that Moulana Masihullah Khan Sahab was looking upwards from 3 AM and smiling and they also said that we have smelled such a beautiful fragrance that we we have not smelled like this in our lifetime. When Hazrath passed away at around 4.30AM, news was spreading to miles and miles. As Ishraq time was coming, all(Muslims as well as non-muslims) were coming in a huge numbers by Wrapping the blankets( cold season was going there) around them to see hazrath. When asked about how you people came to know within some hours, they replied "Hazrath came in our dream and was telling, its the time for leaving from this world, forgive me if I have given you pain.

Hadrat Abu Darda (Rad) sought permission from Hadrat Umar (Rad) to go to Syria. Hadrat Umar (Rad) said, "He is not going to allow him unless he accepts governorship". He replied, "He does not want governorship". Hadrat Umar (Rad) said, "In such a case, I shall not allow you to leave for Syria!". At this, Hadrat Abu Darda (Rad) said, "Alright, I will go but on condition that I will only teach Sunnah and lead Salat to the people there". Hadrat Umar (Rad) agreed. After sometime, Hadrat Umar (Rad) went on a visit to Syria. On reaching the outskirts of Syria, he stayed out of the town until it was dark. Hadrat Umar (Rad) said, "O Yarfa'a! Take me to Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan (Rad) and you will see that he is sitting on costly carpets in the light of a lamp surrounded by his gossiping courtiers. All these things belong to the booty of the Muslims. When you salute him, he will respond but will not allow you in unless he knows your identity". Hadrat Yarfa'a (Rad) narrates, "We left and arrived at the door and said, "Assalamu Alaikum". He said, "Wa alaikum assalam". Hadrat Yarfa'a (Rad) said, "May I come in?" He asked, "Who are you?" He said, "I am Yarfa'a, a man on whose arrival you will not feel happy. Look here! Ameerul Mu'mineen has arrived." Hadrat Umar (Rad) asked me to stand at the gate and he himself hit his Yazid ibn Abi Sufyan (Rad) with his lash between his ears. Thereafter, he rolled up all the articles, put the bundle in the middle of the room and asked the people around not to move till he came back.

Coming out, he said, "O Yarfa'a! take me to Umru bin Aas and then repeated the words uttered in connection with Yazid bin Abi Sufyan (Rad). Accordingly we left for the place and reached the door of Umru bin Aas (Rad). Then Hadrat Umar (Rad) himself said "Assalamu Alaikum". Hadrat Umar (Rad) said, "May I come in?" He asked, "Who are you?". Hadrat Yarfa'a (Rad) said, "It is one whose arrival you are not supposed to enjoy. It is Ameerul Mu'mineen." Thus he opened the door and there they found the court gossipers, sitting in the light of a lamp upon costly carpets. Hadrat Umar (Rad) said, "O Yarfa'a, stand at the gate and do not allow anybody to run away. Then he hit Umru bin Aas with his lash between his ears, folded the articles and put the bundle in the middle of the house. He left the place asking people not to move until he came back.

After that Hadrat Umar (Rad) said, "Take me to Abu Musa (Rad) and we will see their court gossipers, lamp and woolen carpet belonging to the booty of the Muslims, and after that the same incident took place as it happened in the earlier two cases. While hitting him with his lash Hadrat Umar (Rad) said, “You too, O Musa!” Abu Musa (Rad) said, “This is nothing in comparison to what others are doing. By Allah, I have taken from the booty as much as others have taken.” When Hadrat Umar (Rad) asked about the cushion, he replied, “Local people say Imarat does not look nice without all these articles.” Hadrat Umar (Rad) then made a bundle of these articles and put it in the middle instructing that nobody should leave the place until I come back.

After that, Hadrat Umar (Rad) said, “Now take me to a brother of mine and you will find there neither courtiers, nor the lamp, nor the door bolted from within. He will sitting on small pebbles with his head reclining on a pillow stuffed with dry leaves. He will be covering his body with a thin blanket unable to protect him from the severe cold.” In short, we started and arrived at his door. Hadrat Umar (Rad) said, “Assalamu Alaikum” and he was responded, “Walaikum Assalamu”. Then Hadrat Umar (Rad) said, “May I come in?” He was immediately permitted. They entered into the room by pushing the door open as it was not bolted from within. Since the room was dismal dark, Hadrat Umar (Rad) had to search for him with his hands. He was found in the same state as Hadrat Umar (Rad) had earlier described about him. Hadrat Abu Darda (Rad) said, “Who are you? Are you Ameerul Mu’mineen?” Hadrat Umar (Rad) replied in the affirmative. He said, “I remember we are meeting after nearly one year.” Hadrat Umar (Rad) said, “May Allah take care of you. Did I not give you enough scope to earn necessary comforts for yourself? Had I not done so?” Hadrat Abu Darda (Rad) said, “O Umar! Do you remember that Hadith in which the Holy Prophet had said.” Hadrat Umar (Rad) said, “Which Hadith are you referring to?” Hadrat Abu Darda (Rad) said,

“All of you should have that much belongings with you for passing your life as a riding traveller does.”

Hadrat Umar (Rad) replied, “Yes, I remember very well.”
At this Hadrat Abu Darda (Rad) said, “O Umar! What have we done after the departure of the Holy Prophet "
The narrator states, “After that they jointly wept till morning."
