    Default Is hell real ?

Do Muslims think the hell. and hellfire described in the quran is literally true?

For example the verses 22.19 to verse 22.22

If so, why do they worship a God that would do this to people?

Yes. We believe "hell" described in Quran and numerous Ahadith.

Because, Allah is the most merciful and kind also. Those who deny to obey Allah's words, hell is the most appropriate place for him.

PS: Edit your Madhhab option into "Not muslim".

Because those who deny God will reside in Hell eternally.
And those who fully submit to him will reside in Jannah (Paradise)

You should look at both sides, not just read description of hell.

Those who have faith and do righteous deeds,- they are the best of creatures. Their reward is with Allah: Gardens of Eternity, beneath which rivers flow; they will dwell therein for ever; Allah well pleased with them, and they with Him: all this for such as fear their Lord and Cherisher. View more verses (Quran 98:7-8)

(Every) fruit (enjoyment) will be there for them; they shall have whatever they call for. (Quran 36:57)

For such, the reward is Forgiveness from their Lord, and Gardens with rivers flowing underneath (paradise), wherein they shall abide forever. How excellent is this reward for the doers (who do righteous deeds according to Allâh's Orders). (Quran3:136)

They will recline (with ease) On Thrones (of dignity) Arranged in ranks; And We shall join them To Companions, with beautiful Big and lustrous eyes. And those who believe And whose families follow Them in Faith -- to them Shall We join their families: Nor shall We deprive them (Of the fruit) of aught Of their works: (Yet) is each individual In pledge for his deeds. (Quran 52:20-21)

(Here is) a Parable of the Garden which the righteous are promised: in it are rivers of water incorruptible; rivers of milk of which the taste never changes; rivers of wine, a joy to those who drink; and rivers of honey pure and clear. In it there are for them all kinds of fruits; and Grace from their Lord. (Can those in such Bliss) be compared to such as shall dwell for ever in the Fire, and be given, to drink, boiling water, so that it cuts up their bowels (to pieces)? (Quran, 47:15)

And their recompense shall be Paradise, and silken garments, because they were patient. Reclining on raised thrones, they will see there neither the excessive heat of the sun, nor the excessive bitter cold, (as in Paradise there is no sun and no moon). The shade will be close upon them, and bunches of fruit will hang low within their reach. Vessels of silver and cups of crystal will be passed around amongst them, crystal-clear, made of silver. They will determine the measure of them according to their wishes. They will be given a cup (of wine) mixed with Zanjabeel, and a fountain called Salsabeel. Around them will (serve) boys of perpetual youth. If you see them, you would think they are scattered pearls. When you look there (in Paradise) you will see a delight (that can not be imagined), and a Great Dominion. Their garments will be of fine green silk and gold embroidery. They will be adorned with bracelets of silver, and their Lord will give them a pure drink. (Quran 76:12-21)

What point is there in my reading the descriptions of heaven, if only believers in Muhammad go there? As far as I can see the quran says all unbelievers will go to hell.

Incorrect. For those who came after muhammad , one of the conditions is to believe in his message and follow his ways. But for for those who came before him those who believed in the prophets of their time and followed their ways are in the same category of 'believers'.

The quran also says of hell,
19.71 There is not one of you but shall approach it. That is the fixed ordinance of your Lord.
19.72 Then we shall rescue those who kept from evil, and leave the evil doers crouching there.

Incorrect again. The verse 71 in Surah (chapter) Maryam (Mary) is in reference to the crossing over Hell, which everyone believer and disbeliever will have to cross.

belief in Allah is not based on what He will do or will not do, it is based on the fact that He exists and He is the creator of each and everything. Allah wants His creation to worship him, and as His creation we must do as He wills. if we do not do as He wills then it is His choice if He wants to punish us or not.
