How do you say "food" in msa arabic?
I know that one way of saying food is طعام. I know this is the formal way, and it appears in the holy quran, but is أكل another way of saying it in the formal way? I know that there are roots of it like feeding, etc. in the quran, but does it actually mean food?
I know that it means food in slang, but im looking for the formal way. Jazakallah Khair.

أكل means both "food" and the verbal noun "eating"
By the way, MSA is different from Qur'anic Arabic.

Salaam,
The word طعام is from the root طعم which means to taste. طعام is translated as food, however this root is not used for 'eating' but instead it is used for 'feeding' (أطعم)
Whereas أكل means food as well but instead has the meaning of food/eating. It is also used in the Qur'an with the meaning of 'devour' [surah fajr 89:19]
Hunger is a different word altogether, جوع (see surah qur'aysh) and one would say أنا جوعان (I am hungry)

Yes you are correct, ذاق means to taste, meaning the verb 'to taste', e.g I tasted an apple. طعم is the noun e.g. the taste of an apple

o..ok the same word taste...if it is verb..is zaikha and for noun it is used as ta'am
so as u mentioned in ur previous post.. root word of ta'am is to taste and it is translated as food, so basically in arabic ta'am meaning food.

جوعان is colloquial. In MSA it would be جائع

So if you were to say i am hungry, you would use أنا جوعان . Would there be two dhama on the last letter, or one. I know that some adjectives only get one in special cases.

It is not correct to say that "ta`ama" means only tasting and it is not used for eating. Ta`ama yat`amu means both to eat and taste and ta`am is used for all those things that can be eaten. Ibn Manzur says in Lisan al-`Arab [12:363]:
الطعام اسم جامع لكل ما يؤكل وقد طعم يطعم طعما فهو طاعم إذا أكل أو ذاق
"Ta`aam is a comprehensive noun used for all edible things. It is said ta`ama yat`amu ta`man fa huwa ta`im if someone eats or tastes."
It is also used in the Qur'an -- "uhilla lakum sayd ul-bahri wa ta`amuhu" (5:96), for example -- for food and this is why a restaurant is called "mat`am" in Arabic. "At`ama" does mean to feed but that is from al-thulathi al-mazid, while ta`ama, what the questioner asked about, is from al-thulathi al-mujarrad.
And Jaw`an is ghayr munsarif so it will not accept tanwin.
