Allama Iqbal’s Dua

Translation

Ya Rab Dil-e-muslim Ko Woh Zinda Tamanna Dey
Jo Qalb Ko Garma Dey Jo Rooh Ko Tadpa Dey

Oh Allah! Give Muslim’s heart that life-giving sustenance
That warms the heart, makes the soul restless.

Phir Vadi-e-faran Ke Har Zarray Ko Chamka Dey
Phir Shok-e-tamasha Dey Phir Zoq-e-taqaza Dey

Once again make every speck of Faran’s valley glisten.
Make him relish the outering of the self with upward striving.

Mehroom-e-tamasha Ko Phir Deeda-e-beena Dey
Dekha Hai Jo Kuch Main Nay Aoron Ko Bhi Dikhla Dey

Deprived of outward manifestation, give him the gift of insight;
Whatever I have seen let others also see it.

Batkay Huay Aahoo Ko Phir Soyay Haram Lay Chal
Is Shehr Kay Khogar Ko Visatay Sehra Dey

Let the lost deer once again seek the sanctity of the Haram.
Give the heart that seeks it, the expanse of the desert.

Paida Dilay Verran May Phir Shorish Mehsher Kar
Is Mahfile Khali Ko Phir Shahiday Laila Dey

Rekindle the heart’s desolation, so that it seethes with fire and brimstone
Make his empty howdah, a witness to Laila.

Is Daur Ki Zulmat Main Har Qalb-e-pareshan Ko
Woh Daag-e-mohabbat Dey Jo Chaand Ko Sharma Dey

In these times of darkness endow every frustrated heart and stipple it
With the mole that makes the moon hide its face in bashfulness.

Rifat Maqasid Ko Hum Rosh Zulakha Kar
Khudaryay Sahil Dey Aazadiyay Darya Dey

With flight of high purpose make it the companion of Sirius
Invest him with the self-reliance of the shore, the freedom of the sea.

Bay Los Mohobat Ho Bay Baak Sadaqat Ho
Senu May Ujala Kar Dil Surati Mina Dey

So that love flourishes sans selfishness, attuned to unbridled truthfulness;
Let misfortune’s coming be laced with streaks of your graciousness.

Ahsaas Inayat Kar Asaare Musibat Ka
Imroz Ki Shorish Me Andeshae Farda Dey

In today’s hurly-burly reveal the hopes of tomorrow;

Mae Bulbule Naalan Hun Ek Ujdey Golistan Ta
Taseer Ka Sayel Hun Muhtaj Ko Daata Dey

I am a plaintive bulbul in a wasteland of a garden.
I am a beggar for your alchemy; Give Oh Allah to this destitute.
