    Default Coca-cola is haraam?

    Asalamu alykum

It's a pretty old story but has any mufti given a fatwa that coca-cola is haraam. Personally,I have stopped drinking it ever since the story came out about coca-cola having alcohol in it.

Plus I feel that as Muslims we shud try and avoid coca-cola and support the likes of Qibla cola, etc who contribute a ceratin amount of their sales to Islamic causes.

Alot of Muslims think its some sort of joke when you tell them that coca-cola has alcohol in it and if this is the case we shud try and make them more aware of it. So I would be grateful if the other bros and sisters post any developments which I might have missed.

It's true, coke has .03 % ethanol in it (I think that is the amount, it is either .02 or .03).

I try not to drink it anyways; they support israel!

I should stop with carbonated drinks altogether; wreaks havoc on my GI tract, man.
    Whew!

    Salam,

okay this is the first i'm hearing about alcohol in coke?!!?!? In this case would it also be haram for the hanafis, as they are more relaxed when it comes to certain things like these than the other 3 schools?

In terms of coke being haram, an (moderate) ahle-hadith friend of mine once told me that there were muftis from the middle east who had passed fatwas that it was haram because of what it leads to - ie money going twards the zionist entity.

I have heard that Red Bull has traces of alcohol in it - anyone know more?

Hmm everything we eat/drink has a slight trace of alcohol.
That doesnt mean its haraam because it depends on the source of that alcohol.
Its similar to the lucozade and ribena story which came out last yr and everyone stopped drinking it.

Anyways this sorta stuff has already been answered by mufti desai:

Principally, if the alcohol is extracted from grapes or dates it is not permissible. Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, "Khamr (wine) is from these two trees, dates and grapes." (Mishkãt p. 317).

Furthermore, Rasulullah (Sallallaahu Álayhi Wasallam) said, 'Alcohol itself is prohibited and intoxication in every other beverage.' (Hidaaya vol. 4 p.497).

However, if the alcohol in foods is not from dates or grape extract but from, for example, ethanol which is fermented from sugar cane molasses and does not intoxicate, then it is permissible.

    and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

    Mufti Ebrahim Desai
