“Taqlid is blind following, and blind following is forbidden” is what some argue to be the truth of the matter.

“Taqlid is an obligation,” insist others.

“You must follow one of the four madhhabs” some say.

“No! You have to follow the Qur'an and Sunnah,” is how others zealously respond.

“You must weigh-up the proofs and then follow the strongest position,” is what so many preachers are saying.

”Can someone who doesn't even know five words of Arabic weigh-up the proofs?"

“The great Imams themselves actually forbade taqlid," we are swiftly told.

Then there is the confused majority who simply ask: “What's all the fuss about?” “What is a madhhab anyway?” “Is the issue really that difficult?”
