Default Gel Gör Beni Aşk Neyledi/Come See What Love Has Done To Me

Here is Talat Sait Halman's English translation of Yunus Emre's Gel Gör Beni Aşk Neyledi. I should add that I was tempted to change the letter 'L' in 'love' to 'Love' but will leave it as translated. You can listen to a rendition of the poem here without music (or here with music).

Those of you who know Turkish, here's an audio on Yunus Emre's life.

Come See What Love Has Done To Me
Burning, burning, I drift and tread.
Love spattered my body with blood.
I'm not in my senses nor mad,
Come, see what love has done to me.

Now and then like the winds I blow,
Now and then like the roads I go,
Now and then like the floods I flow,
Come, see what love has done to me.

Hold my hand, lift me from this place
Or take me into your embrace...
You made me weep, make me rejoice,
Come, see what love has done to me.

Searching, I roam from land to land,
In all tongues I ask for the Friend.
Who knows my plight where love is banned?
Come, see what love has done to me.

Lovelorn, I tread; madly I scream.
    My loved one is my only dream;
I wake and plunge into deep gloom.
Come, see what love has done to me.

    I'm Yunus, mystic of sorrow,
    Suffering wounds from top to toe;
In the Friend's hands I writhe in woe.
Come, see what love has done to me.

    Gel Gör Beni Aşk Neyledi
    Ben yürürüm yana yana
    Aşk boyadı beni kana
    Ne âkilem ne divane
    Gel gör beni aşk neyledi

    Geh eserim yeller gibi
    Geh tozarım yollar gibi
    Geh akarım seller gibi
    Gel gör beni aşk neyledi

    Ya elim al kaldır beni
    Ya vaslına erdir beni
    Çok ağlattın güldür beni
    Gel gör beni aşk neyledi

    Ben yürürüm ilden ile
    Şeyh anarım dilden dile
    Gurbette hâlim kim bile
    Gel gör beni aşk neyledi

    Mecnun oluban yürürüm
    Ol yâri düşte görürüm
    Uyanıp melûl olurum
    Gel gör beni aşk neyledi

    Miskin Yunus biçareyim
    Baştan ayağa yâreyim
    Dost ilinden âvâreyim
    Gel gör beni aşk neyledi

It is beautiful, masha'Allah. I'll try to compile some more of his poems here.

When my son was younger, I used to recite this poem (by Sadik Efendi) to him but I was not able to find the translation. I'll keep looking and post it here if I do find it (no music in linked poem).

Yes brother, the "Friend" in Yunus Emre's poem is Allah (SWT) as is the "love" - love for Allah (SWT). Yunus is writing about wanting nothing, feeling nothing but Love for Allah (SWT).

    Wassalamualaikum sister:

I have never been asked this question before so give me some time to see what I can find and I will respond with some resources insha'Allah. That said, there are other Turkish speakers on this list too so if they know of anything, perhaps they might be able to list some resources for you as well.

If you do not hear back from me (or someone else hasn't listed anything), insha'Allah you can remind me in a couple of weeks. Is that okay?

Insha'Allah. As sister Firaswagner has noted, there are some audio (and video) resources to learn Turkish.

Please correct me if I am wrong but my impression is that you are not looking for 'lessons' per-se but materials through which you will practice what you learn (and possibly decipher connections between English-Turkish yourself). If so, it will take some time since a lot of the Turkish materials online either don't have English subtitles (English with Turkish subtitles would be difficult for someone just starting out); or, have visuals that would not be appropriate to list here; or, include music... even the ones I am tempted to list (youtube vidoes of Yunus Emre's poems, documentary on Fatih Sultan Mehmet) are accompanied by music and I have not been able to locate ones with subtitles (yet... still looking). As I find them, I will list them for you insha'Allah (with any necessary warnings about background music).
