Can't you be muslim and names John ?
The Arabic translation of " Jesus " is "Eissa" and it is a common name for muslims.

Please tell me one reason that you feel you have to change your name?
Religion is about the belief (heart ) not about the name.

Really curious to know your thinking
    Salaams

I don't know what the brother is thinking but I have a strong feeling that it is the same thing that all the reverts in Persia, Africa, South West Europe, Central Asia, South East and South Asia were thinking when they adopted Arabic names in line with the Sahaba - that they wanted to be close to the Prophet (saws) and his companions in every way that they could...

One way to do this is by changing name or Arabising an existing name.

If you ask me John is ok but Yahya is better and it is close to how it was said in that Prophet's (as) day.

historically your thinking is more curious than Abdullah's and you are the one breaking what is the established convention not him.

both Abdullah bin Gib or Abdullah Gibson is a great name.

brother Abdullah maybe it is better if you keep Gibson instead of bin Gib though

because although Gib is your ancestor it is better to use bin before your father's name?

Good heavens you are not English.
You see it is difficult for an Indian to forget the past.

I'm curious. How does it "translate"? As I understand it Abdullah translates to English as "Slave of God". Is that also what Timothy means? What language is Timothy from?

I suppose the translation verb was operative on Gibson=son of Gib only. Timothy means honouring God or honoured by God - as per the net. Abdullah is taken as a substitute for that. I am sure there will be good Arabic word for a person who honours God or who is honoured by God. Arabic experts on line?
