In the second volume of the Malfuzat of Faqih al-Ummah Mufti Mahmud al-Hasan al-Gangohithere is a brief discussion on the opinion of some scholars concerning Shaykh al-Islam Ib Taymiyyah
Ibn Taymiyyah in the opinion of Ibn Hajar Makki, Taj al-Deen Subki and 'Allamah Kashmiri رحمة الله عليهم
'Allamah Ibn Hajar Makki al-Shafi`i رحمة الله عليه (d. 974 H) who lived in the time of [the Mughal] King Humayun and came long after Hafidh Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani ,رحمة الله عليه (d. 852 H) very strongly opposed Hafidh Ibn Taymiyyah (who is regarded as a Hanbali as stated in the muqaddamah (introduction) of Faidh al-Bari, 1:45). In his book Fatawa Hadithiyyah, he writes:
لا تصغ الى ما في كتب ابن تيمية وتلميذه ابن القيم الجوزية ممن اتخذ الهه هواه وأضله الله على علم وختم على
سمعه وقلبه وجعل على بصره غشاوة
In another place, he writes: “May Allah send such a lightening from the sky which will burn Ibn Taymiyyah and his followers thereby cleansing the earth.”
'Allamah Taj al-Din al-Subk dedicated 32 pages in refuting Ibn Taymiyyah in Al-Tabaqat al-Kubra. 'Allamah Anwar Shah Kashmiri رحمة الله عليه was an admirer of Ibn Taymiyyah. However, in Faidh al-Bari in the fourth volume, he has also refuted him. I personally made a note of 18 places wherein he has refuted Hafidh Ibn Taymiyyah.
Ibn Taymiyyah was a Hanbali
Mawlana Ashraf 'Ali Thanawi رحمة الله عليه would refer to Hafidh Ibn Taymiyyah and Hafidh Ibn Qayyim as Sultan al-Qalam (the kings of the pen). They present mountains of proofs to establish a matter, but they moved with such speed that they did not bother about any obstacles and barriers. Someone once asked, “Was Ibn Taymiyyah a Maliki?” He replied, “No, he was a Hanbali.”
